Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria, Reel Foods Oyster Bar

03Sept2014_1_Wine-MeetUp_Flatbread_SignOn Wednesday, we joined the Wine Meet-Up group for a gathering at Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria in Boise at 800 W. Main, Suite 230, Boise, ID 83702 and their phone is (208) 287-4757. Not bad, overall, but their food, at least two of them that we had, were very spicy and Robin could not finish all of hers. It might be a good idea if the Wait Person would explain that some menu items are spicy. Our Waiter, Dallas, was very good, except he did not tell us of the spiciness. Their menu and bar offerings are readily available at Boise Menu. Here are some photos from our visit. I do hope that you enjoy it when you go there. Ambiance is really very good and children are welcome, they even have a childs plate of pasta, which Robin got. And they do advertise that their products are purchased locally as much as possible. I can not, however, give them more than 3-Stars out of 5-Stars because of the spiciness of the foods. Enjoy these photos. Cheers!

We could have had potato salad instead of the fries. We just love this seafood market and get 99% of our seafood from there. They even have a section of frozen, overstocked seafood selections at quite a price discount.

01July2014_1_Shangri-La-Tea-Room_and_Cafe_Front-Door-SignThe Shangri-La Tea Room and Cafe, that is! Good music with the Fleet Street Klezmer Band and Dancing by the Cecilia Rinn Starbelly Dancers. And then, there is always the awesomely different food served up. Vegetarian at that. But delicious. Easily a 4-Star, if not higher, out of 5-Stars restaurant. Don’t wrinkle up your nose at the thought of a vegan dinner. This is really superior. We’ll be back! Enjoy these photos of the evening and Left-Click any of them to see enlarged. Cheers!

TheBuzzApril_2Cristi and Tommy and all have been working very hard to “re-design” the interior of the Buzz in Boise. Personally, I like the new look! And they have installed a growler bar, which is fun and fantastic! We have two beer steins that I am going to take to the Buzz. Cristi said it would be OK to leave them there for use at the new growler bar. Maybe we can get a shelf to put them on.and use when we go to the Buzz. How many different types can we get? Let’s display our steins at the Buzz. Any takers? Enjoy this new look! Cheers!

Hat-Ranch-Winery-LogoClear blue skies! Light, cooling breezes! 88 degree temperatures. Only thing missing is a tempting ocean breeze. We spent the day both at Hat Ranch Winery off of Plum Road in Marsing (their postal address is in Caldwell) and the Snake River AVA and then to a wonderful dinner at The Orchard House. Hat Ranch was releasing their Tempranillo, which is very good. The Orchard House has good meatloaf.
Hat Ranch Winery bought Vale Wine Co., as some of you might already know. Some of the Vale wines were there for us to try also. Their Chardonnay is really a good one and will pare well with foods that need a citru match. Not an oaky chardonnay. The appetizers that they had to accompany the wines, see the photo of the menu board below, were a perfect match. Enjoy these photos and if you are in the area, stop in at both Hat Ranch Winery and The Orchard House. You won’t be disappointed. Cheers!

Orchard_House_Logo_2And then, we went to The Orchard House for dinner. Goodbye diet for today! We always enjoy the meals here. If I were to choose which meal I would constantly get here, it would definitely be the breakfast. It is just so satisfying. But today, we had a good Meatloaf dinner and an Idaho Trout dinner. This is one place that you can get a good meatloaf away from your own kitchen. The Orchard House is located at 14949 Sunnyslope Road, Caldwell (just outside of Marsing) in the Snake River AVA.

We had to check this bottle of wine out. It really is named for the Weiser Old Tyme Fiddlers Festival, which is just over for the year.

Old Almo Creamery, Almo, Idaho

Almo, Creamline Creamery, Homogenization, Idaho, Idaho Dairy, natural

21sept2013_2_robins-bday-captains-shack_gumbo_getting-happyRobin came across this interesting post on the difference between homogenized and pasteurized milk. It is from Old Almo Creamery in Almo, Idaho. Here is a little about the creamery taken directly from their web site. Enjoy the reading and the information.

Old Almo Creamery is a family owned and operated dairy located in Almo, Idaho, in the shadow of the City of Rocks National Reserve. It is a third generation farm that has always strived to produce quality products. Our mission is to continue this tradition of excellence by providing fresh, quality dairy products to our local communities at affordable prices. We strive to maintain excellent land stewardship practices and efficient use of resources to ensure that this legacy can be passed on to future generations.
What We Offer
Our milk is natural, local, fresh, and creamline making it more like the milk you remember drinking as a child, with the cream floating on the top. It is slowly pasteurized in a vat, cooled, and then packaged in half gallon glass bottles. In addition to bottled milk, we offer a variety of cheeses, cheese curd and ice cream. We use great care to ensure the quality of all our products.

And here, also taken from their web site, is a little about their milk. From what I understand, you can order their products directly from the web site or see them at the Burley Farmers Market.

Why Creamline Milk?
Cream line milk is, simply milk that is allowed to be milk. Like the milk found on most store shelves, cream line milk is pasteurized. We do not, however, homogenize our milk. Homogenization is a process which breaks up the fat particles in milk so that they stay in suspension. The process of homogenization uses very high pressure to break down the fat molecules into particles so small that they can be dissolved into the rest of the milk. They lose buoyancy and thus, the cream never rises to the top of homogenized milk. We believe that homogenization diminishes the flavor and decreases many of the health benefits of milk.
Studies have shown that when fat molecules are forcibly broken up by mechanical means, an enzyme called Xanthine Oxidase is released and allowed to penetrate the intestinal wall. Once it gets through the intestinal wall, Xanthine Oxidase gets into the bloodstream and is capable of creating scar damage to the heart and arteries, which may in turn cause the body to release cholesterol into the blood as a means of protecting the scarred areas with fatty tissue. This can lead to Arteriosclerosis. When un-homogenized milk is consumed, Xanthine Oxidase is normally excreted from the body without much absorption. Our milk is also free of controversial growth hormones including rBST, and is free of animal byproducts. Cows were meant to eat plants not animals, thus the food they eat here contains no animal byproducts.

Milk is all natural — do you know where your milk comes from?

We had two awesome dinners over the weekend. Grilled Lamb Chops marinated in fresh rosemary, fresh mint and fresh oregano, olive oil and salt and pepper. (That’s pretty much our standard marinade for lamb chops!) They were awesome. And then we made a bruschetta with an avocado and garlic spread. (The bruschetta was toasted Acme Bake Shop Red Wheat bread) Mash two cloves of garlic and mix with 1/2 avocado mashed. This makes a great tapas selection. Served that with a wonderful bowl of Coconut Shrimp Soup. Great dinners! Here, look at the photos. Enjoy!

SushiJoy_LogoI have yet to have anything bad here at Sushi Joy. It is still the finest Chinese/Japanese restaurant in Boise. Bar none! I by far prefer the Japanese cuisine over the Chinese and that is not because one is better than the other. It is just a preference. The Samurai Yellowtail, as listed on the first photo below, was awesome. A great ying-yang of sweet and biting flavors. The Yellowtail is somewhat sweet. The House Sauce was pleasingly biting. If I could give them a rating of more than 5-Stars, I certainly would. But just be assured, this restaurant is a solid, very solid, 5-Stars. Left-Click any of these photos to see them enlarged. Cheers!

12May2014_1b_Captains-Shack_Scotch-Eggs_Plated_FlashI have never tasted Scotch Eggs. Robin has, probably in another life or at Piper Pub here in Boise. They were “invented” in London in an upscale department store. Here is a link for more information on Scotch Eggs – What Are They?, posted earlier on this blog. (There is a recipe there also.) They are really not too difficult to make, but I think I should have had the heat a little lower, cooked them slower and a little longer. But they were good. Enjoy!

26April2014_1_Beef-Short-Ribs_Homestead-Ribs-ThawingThis was an awesome dinner! Beef Short Ribs from Ed Wilsey and Homestead Natural Foods. It is really nice to see that most of these products are available, and were bought at, The Boise Farmers Market. If you live in, or around Boise, this is the “place to be” on Saturday mornings. And I sincerely urge you, whether or not you live in Boise, to visit and support your local farmers and your local farmer’s markets. In this meal, we used products from Homestead Natural Foods (beef short ribs), River View Farms (wild garlic and carrots), Meadowlark Farms (eggs) and Purple Sage Farms (rosemary and salad greens). From our own garden, we used fresh thyme, Miner’s lettuce and Mexican oregano. An Indian Creek Winery wine was served with dinner and a 2002 Parma Ridge Vineyards Milange was used in the recipe. Enjoy these photos and the recipe of this awesome dinner. Cheers!
