03Sept2014_1c_Wine-MeetUp_Flatbread_Robin_GoodSqlaw? What is that? Acually it is a roasted spaghetti squash slaw, thus Sqlaw. Here is the recipe for the Sqlaw. It is also in the recipe file above.
But, before you can have a sandwich or a full meal, one must have some type of appetizer. Here are two that Robin found online and the recipe link is posted with the photo. Which one do we like best? Well, maybe if you come to maybe the November Treasure Valley Wine Society tasting in November, you just may have the opportunity to try our favorite. We really did enjoy and like all of these offerings. Try them. Let us know what you think. Cheers!

17Sept2014_1_Robins-71st-BDay_Chandlers-FrontWhen one reaches a given year, let’s say 60 or there abouts, one really should celebrate ones birthday over several days. And one should have plenty of food and wine! I do believe that Robin had just that this year!! Happy Birthday, Honey! Let’s start the celebration on Sunday, September 14 with a dinner that Marnie and Mac made. Thanks to Sophia and Chris, too, for helping with this event. Look what we had.

Mac's 2010 Mead!

Then we had to rest for a while after eating all of this. This is the Birthday Rule: When it is your time to celebrate, YOU get to choose where you want to go for dinner. Any place in town. U-Pick-It! Robin chose Chandler’s Steak House this year. Good Choice. Look at this spread, and they knew it was her Birthday! Thank-You for a great dinner. The food, The Staff and the Wine were all super!

09Sept2014_1_The-Buzz-NW-FoodWine_Wine-BarCristi and Tommy keep “adjusting” the floor plan of The Buzz. They have moved the wine bar around to be able to add more table space. You can see the “adjustment” in this photo.
The dinner tonight was OK. I have had better at the Monthly Wine Dinners. But, I have also had worse. I think that by tonights dinner – Wednesday, things will be adjusted. Many thanks again to Peggy Hands-Behrens and Joseph Geist for helping with the wine pouring, table settings, menu planning and bussing the tables.
Cristi opened the evening with a 2013 Split Rail Rosé of Tempranillo that was pretty good. I was surprised. Mellow and smooth with a long finish and good appeal. [17] $15.00. Here is what else we had. Enjoy! Left-Click any of these photos to see them enlarged.

Cranberry Feta Pinwheels A very good opener and I don't like Feta! There were none left ove3r on my plate. 2011 Iris Pinot Noir 13.5% alc. light on the body and balance. fair appeal [16]

The soup, to me, was over spiced. It wiped the wine out and the wine emphasized the spiciness. The carrots and celery needed to be cooked a little more.

Pot Roast with Potatoes and Carrots 2013 Saviah Creek Jack Syrah 14.1% alc. great bouquet, balance and body. mild finish [18] $16.00 Some servings of the pot roast needed to be cooked longer. They were tough. And again, the carrots and potatoes needed to be cooked a little longer. I missed some gravy with the pot roast.

Joseph Geist brought these two wines for us to savor. I really liked the apricot. The pomegranate very tart. I did not care for this one.

Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria, Reel Foods Oyster Bar

03Sept2014_1_Wine-MeetUp_Flatbread_SignOn Wednesday, we joined the Wine Meet-Up group for a gathering at Flatbread Neapolitan Pizzeria in Boise at 800 W. Main, Suite 230, Boise, ID 83702 and their phone is (208) 287-4757. Not bad, overall, but their food, at least two of them that we had, were very spicy and Robin could not finish all of hers. It might be a good idea if the Wait Person would explain that some menu items are spicy. Our Waiter, Dallas, was very good, except he did not tell us of the spiciness. Their menu and bar offerings are readily available at Boise Menu. Here are some photos from our visit. I do hope that you enjoy it when you go there. Ambiance is really very good and children are welcome, they even have a childs plate of pasta, which Robin got. And they do advertise that their products are purchased locally as much as possible. I can not, however, give them more than 3-Stars out of 5-Stars because of the spiciness of the foods. Enjoy these photos. Cheers!

We could have had potato salad instead of the fries. We just love this seafood market and get 99% of our seafood from there. They even have a section of frozen, overstocked seafood selections at quite a price discount.

CafeVicinoLogo_2_Wine_ColorWow! Such a great evening having some outstanding wines and an outstanding dinner prepared by Chef Richard Langston, a James Beard Award Nominee! A total of 7 courses and 7 wines. This superb restaurant is located at 808 W Fort St, Boise, ID 83702, (208) 472-1463. It might be a good idea to call for reservations. We had a Dover Sole dish that was absolutely wonderful. So I asked the question, “What is the difference between Dover Sole and Flounder?” The answer is here from Chef Richard and from E-How.

Sole and flounder are both types of flatfish, and because the texture is similar, they are considered interchangeable in recipes. However, they are two separate species with slightly different looks and tastes.
Species
Sole is a type of flatfish. Dover sole, the most common type, is a member of the Soleidae family. Flounder is also a type of flatfish categorized under Heterosomata.
Features
Both fish are flat, with both eyes on one side of their face so they can hide on the ocean floor and watch for prey. While both are oval in shape, flounder is more rounded.

Here is what we had and the wines that went with each course. Thanks to Cafe Vicino for such a great evening and to Chef Richard and his Staff for great service. It was good to see “old” friends again. Enjoy these photos! Left-Click any of the photos to see them enlarged.

Don’t wrinkle up your nose at the thought of a vegan dinner. This is really superior. We’ll be back! Enjoy these photos of the evening and Left-Click any of them to see enlarged. Cheers!

Hat-Ranch-Winery-LogoClear blue skies! Light, cooling breezes! 88 degree temperatures. Only thing missing is a tempting ocean breeze. We spent the day both at Hat Ranch Winery off of Plum Road in Marsing (their postal address is in Caldwell) and the Snake River AVA and then to a wonderful dinner at The Orchard House. Hat Ranch was releasing their Tempranillo, which is very good. The Orchard House has good meatloaf.
Hat Ranch Winery bought Vale Wine Co., as some of you might already know. Some of the Vale wines were there for us to try also. Their Chardonnay is really a good one and will pare well with foods that need a citru match. Not an oaky chardonnay. The appetizers that they had to accompany the wines, see the photo of the menu board below, were a perfect match. Enjoy these photos and if you are in the area, stop in at both Hat Ranch Winery and The Orchard House. You won’t be disappointed. Cheers!

Orchard_House_Logo_2And then, we went to The Orchard House for dinner. Goodbye diet for today! We always enjoy the meals here. If I were to choose which meal I would constantly get here, it would definitely be the breakfast. It is just so satisfying. But today, we had a good Meatloaf dinner and an Idaho Trout dinner. This is one place that you can get a good meatloaf away from your own kitchen. The Orchard House is located at 14949 Sunnyslope Road, Caldwell (just outside of Marsing) in the Snake River AVA.

We had to check this bottle of wine out. It really is named for the Weiser Old Tyme Fiddlers Festival, which is just over for the year.

Sushi Joy - Chinese and Japanese Cuisine, Boise

Tonight we took a break from our kitchen and went tro our favorite Japanese/Chinese/American restaurant – Sushi Joy! And once again, it was 5-Stars out of 5-Stars! Super good. Super delightful. And here Tiger, one of the owners, is doing a super job in making some sashimi and it is fantastic! He does a great job.

Robin is at Sushi Joy awaiting here order. It's all made to order.

I still love the house salad. So simple, yet so delicious. Especially their House Dressing.

For an appetizer, I had this delicious Shof Shelled Crab. The batter was so very light and the crab so delightfully mild and delicious.

My entree was Mango Chicken which was also great. But I think I am going back to the sashimi plates.

And Robin had the Lemon Chicken. This was big enough for two, even maybe three.

TheBuzzApril_2I would be remiss if I did not send our condolences to Tommy and his family for his loss over the weekend.

We had a very quiet and intimate wine tasting at the Buzz last night – Herbs and Wine was the topic. Great topic and job, Cristi! Your choices of topics is what makes these Wine Dinners so very interesting. If you live in Boise, or the surrounding area and you missed this event, you can redeem yourself tonight as the program is repeated. The program starts at 6:30pm and costs $20.00 per person for a 5 Course dinner and at least 6 wines. Here is what we had and the wines to go with dinner. Cheers!
