30Nov2013_1b_New-Boise-Farmers-Market_FB-ImageThe end of the Farmers Market is in sight. So sad! It has been a good season so far as we are concerned. Great indoor venues for these cold Boise, winter days. The new location for the summer months at 10th and Grove is also great.
We visited two new vendors today, Free Range Pizza (pictured here) and Neckar Coffee. Both were very good. Enjoyed the pizza – thin crust. Slightly crispy, but also a chewy interior. Good flavors and flavor combinations. Went very well with the coffee we had, a fresh ground, full bodied Guatemalan coffee. Great job to both vendors. If you are at the market or you see them at a function, be sure to get some of their product, either coffee or pizza or both. You will be pleased as were we. Cheers!

09Nov2013_1_10Barrel-FarmersMarket_Apocalypswe-GlassWe might as well start at 10 Barrel Brew Pub here in Boise for some awesome brew – Apocalypse IPA pictured here – and some great food! We went there for a beer group meet-up, but it was jammed full of people and tables were at a premium, especially at 7:00 at night on a Friday. Great to see that they are doing well, but it was still full. The food, as always, was super and in MNSHO (My Not So Humble Opinion) serves some of the best pub food in Boise. Their Pub Burger is superb as is their Chicken Pot Pie. The Fish and Chips here are also great. Great to have them use as much local products as possible. (There are some brew pubs here in Boise that need to try some real pub food!) Here are some photos of our food. You be the judge and then we will meet you there to join you for dinner. Suede - Imperial Porter and Apocalypse IPA

Suede – Imperial Porter and Apocalypse IPA

The Suede on the left is probably one of their boldest brews and comes in at 9.6% ABV. And to read from their beer list, “The cross country melding of brewers minds finds them creating an Imperial Porter with avocado honey, plus jasmine and calendula flowers from stone farms. The result? Suede is described by their creators as ‘soft and seductive’ and an ‘all season wonder’.” I am not generally a Stout or Porter fan, but I will have this one again. It is good!
The Apocalypse IPA is a West Coast style beer and is their flagship beer. My first introduction to this brew was in Bend, OR – the home of 10 Barrel – in a blind tasting with Deschutes Inversion. The Apocalypse IPA was a clear winner. This brew comes in at 6.8% ABV.

The Chicken Pot Pie is well worth returning for a second helping. And the salad with that dressing was awesome. Delicious!

This plate is a “stand-by” for me when I can not make up my mind what to have to eat. Both of the two plates pictured – the burger and the pot pie – went equally well with both brews pictured above, but in my opinion, the Suede Imperial Porter went best with both dinners!

So moving on in our quest for food – as though we have not found enough yet – Saturday morning found us at the Boise Farmers Market in the winter location through December 21, at 8th Street and Fulton. So great to be able to get the fresh, local produce into December. Yum!

03Nov2013_1_Captains-Shack_Pork-and-KohlrabiWe had never eaten kohlrabi before. This was a real treat – Kohlrabi Schnitzel. And it was delicious! You can get the recipe for this and several variations at German Foods – Kohlrabi.

Etymology:
The name comes from the German Kohl (“cabbage”) plus Rübe ~ Rabi (Swiss German variant) (“turnip”), because the swollen stem resembles the latter, hence its Austrian name Kohlrübe. Kohlrabi is a very commonly eaten vegetable in German speaking countries.
In India, Kohlrabi is more commonly called Knolkhol (English) or Nookal (Hindi). It is also used extensively in the southern part of India. In Kannada, Kohlrabi is called Gedde Kosu or Navilu Kosu. In Kashmiri, the swollen stems are called Moonji (singular: Muund) and the leaves are called Haakh or munji Haakh. One commonly used variety grows without a swollen stem, having just leaves and a very thin stem, and is called Haakh.
Across the United States and Canada, Kohlrabi is seeing a resurgence stemming from the ever-increasing demand for locally grown produce; a trend that goes hand-in-hand with increased variety. Small farmers across North America are enjoying increased sales by cultivating a wider variety of what are now—especially after nationwide agricultural homogenizing efforts over the last half-century, especially in the United States—novel vegetables. Rapid spread of kohlrabi has resulted in a slew of regional name variations. West-coast renditions include bralicaki, bralicocci, and calibrabra. Caliabra, ralibraca, and braliacra are some regional variations heard in the north-eastern regions of the United States. Canadian variations include brawnitabra and tawnybrauble while southern United States have coined caulibrocky and brockycocky.
Description:
Kohlrabi has been created by artificial selection for lateral meristem growth (a swollen, nearly spherical shape); its origin in nature is the same as that of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts: they are all bred from, and are the same species as the wild cabbage plant (Brassica oleracea).
The taste and texture of kohlrabi are similar to those of a broccoli stem or cabbage heart, but milder and sweeter, with a higher ratio of flesh to skin. The young stem in particular can be as crisp and juicy as an apple, although much less sweet.
A basket of kohlrabi:
Except for the Gigante cultivar, spring-grown kohlrabi much over 5 cm in size tend to be woody, as do full-grown kohlrabi much over perhaps 10 cm in size; the Gigante cultivar can achieve great size while remaining of good eating quality. The plant matures in 55–60 days after sowing. Approximate weight is 150 g and has good standing ability for up to 30 days after maturity.
There are several varieties commonly available, including White Vienna, Purple Vienna, Grand Duke, Gigante (also known as “Superschmelz”), Purple Danube, and White Danube. Coloration of the purple types is superficial: the edible parts are all pale yellow. [Wikipedia]

And since it is not privately funded, the funds must come from the public sector. That’s you and me!! So Robin and I did attend. It was held at the Purple Sage Farms outside of Middleton, ID. A beautiful Fall day as you can tell from some of these photos.
Robin and I try very hard to eat local products and we are totally committed to the “Buy Idaho” and “Support You Local Farmers” programs. We are at the New Boise Farmers Market every Saturday and we will follow them indoors on November 2, 2013 to their winter home at the Fulton Street (Boise) location. So we were very pleased when we got the opportunity to attend this gala event at the Purple Sage Farms. Enjoy these photos and please, please support your local farmers. This was such a good and different dinner tonight. Fresh young turnips and beets from the Boise Farmer’s Market this morning. Save the greens and steam them too. Add a little red wine vinegar to the steam water and you’ve got a good vegetable dish. And for dessert. Use up those bananas that were almost “gone”. Robin made great Banana Cup Cakes and topped them with some awesome lemon curd. Here. Look at this dinner. Enjoy …. We did!

In keeping with the theme, Chef Chad emphasized the use of local and fresh products from local farmer’s markets and vegetable stands. He did a good job in using these local products where ever possible. Black Mission Figs don’t grow in the Treasure Valley! Here are some photos of the dishes that Chef Chad showed us this evening. Yup, it’s Saturday and time to stop at the market. We needed some fresh vegetables and eggs. And I always stop at Rollingstone Chevre (see the link in the sidebar) and talk to Karen for a moment or two. My other routine is to stop in at Acme Bake Shop booth and get some their fresh baked sourdough. And Soraya said, “Bob. You must try this Potato Bread.” Now, Soraya has never misled us …. never. So I accepted her challenge and bought a loaf, and a loaf of sourdough also. Robin and I don’t normally eat white bread, but the Potato Bread is really good. Here are some photos of the bread this morning after I took it home and sliced it. Enjoy!

This is a new item, I think. It is a light potato bread that will make a great substitute for your “everyday” white, doughy, pasty white bread. This Potato Bread is definitely not that!

Acme Bake Shop Sourdough Bread This is an amazing sourdough bread. It toasts wonderfully and has a unique sour taste that a sourdough must have. In my opinion, this is the best sourdough in Boise, right up there with the Acme Bake Shop Rye.

I did pick up some fresh vegetables. Turnips, garlic, beets, herbed goat cheese and fresh eggs. So it was not just a “bread run”, although my shopping bag looked that way. A good time at the market. I will hate to see it close later this fall.

Considering that Idaho imports 95% of the farm products sold statewide, it’s time that we look seriously on the support of our local farmers and control the carbon footprint that we leave. That’s what this gathering was today at the New Boise Farmer’s Market. It was good too, to see some of the political dignitaries, market dignitaries and Idaho farmers who participated in the event. Below are some photos from the morning and from the New Boise Farmer’s Market. Enjoy the following photos. Cheers!

So there you have a little different post about the New Boise Farmer’s Market. Robin and I are avid supporters of Think Local – Buy Local, as I have stated many times in the past. Everyone, regardless of where you live or what city or state you reside in, need to put more emphasis on local farmers and purchasing their products. Food is essential to everyone of us, so whenever possible, support your local farmer! Buy local in the summer when vegetable products are available and then can them or freeze them and eat your local products year around. Local meats – beef, elk, lamb, chicken, pork – are usually available all year, as are local eggs. Use that local resource. Support your local agriculture industry. No need to go “out-of-country” to stay nourished. And when you go out for a meal, choose those restaurants that use only local products. Here are some suggestions: Red Feather Lounge, Bitter Creek Ale House, The Buzz, Le Cafe de Paris, 10 Barrel Brew Pub or The Orchard House are just a few. There are more. Search them out and enjoy some great local food. Look in the Sidebar. There are many businesses there that buy, sell or produce products locally. Cheers!!
