25Dec2012_1a_Christmas_Buddy-And-Piglet_BetterOh, my! What a great two day Christmas celebration!! Great food! Great wines! Great family! I just love it when the extended family – at least the Idaho portion – all get together and have a good meal together. Thank- You Mac and Marnie for the Christmas dinner. And Thank-You everyone for all of the great gifts! And Mac, for making the Italian Wine Cork Retriever!!! And Buddy got his Piglet! I think he thinks he is being replaced. Not a chance!! (Left-Click any of these photos for a larger view.)
But let’s start with Christmas Eve food. Robin and I spent a nice quiet evening at home. To start with, we made a salad of Caprese Scallop Stacks and then for the entree we made Cod with Tomato Cream Sauce. I used both Cod and Sole in this recipe. These were really delicious. The photos are posted below.

Then for Christmas morning – I remember my Mom running downtown in Newark, DE., to Bing’s Bakery and picking up a Christmas Morning Pastry Wreath – Robin made these wonderful cheese Danishes. I was still asleep when I smelled this wonderful aroma, drifting through the house. It was these pastries. Yum-O!

Then in the afternoon, we packed up the car and went to Marnie and Macs for an awesome dinner. And a yummy dinner it was. Marnie made a root vegetable, slightly curried, creamy soup that was delicious. We want the recipe, Marn. (Sorry I didn’t get a photo of it.) And Mac did a great job with the lamb. But look at what they made.

And for dessert –

And to go with the dinner and the chocolate dessert, some wines we pulled. Enlarge the photos and read the labels. Especially the vintages. These were awesome!

Then we all gathered around the beautiful Christmas tree that Marnie and Mac had decorated.

10 Sunday Jul 2011

Posted by Bob and Robin in Anniversary, Dessert, Food, Main Dish, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, What's For Dinner?, Wine and Food Festivals

Oh yes. This little guy was sitting in our backyard just singing away and telling us that July 14 is quickly approaching. July 14? Our 28th Wedding Anniversary and yes, Bastille Day! So Robin says look in the wine cellar for some 1983 good wines – as if there is anything else. And she also suggests the following menu for dinner. Now this sounds great!!

1983 Porto Hutcheson Port
Original – $11.99, Today $197.00

1983 Mercury Clos des Barraults
Original – $15.95, Today $100.00

——————————

Here is the start to our Anniversary Dinner.

——————————

28th Wedding Anniversary Dinner
July 14, 2011

Cod with Tomato Shrimp Sauce

Serves: 2

Ingredients:
2 T Crème Fraîche or Sour Cream
Minced Chives
2 t Sun-Dried Tomato Paste
1/8 t Cayenne
1 t Lemon Juice
1 oz Salad Shrimp, cooked
2 4-oz Cod fillets

Directions:
Mix the 2 tablespoons of Crème Fraîche, or sour cream, with the chives, tomato paste, cayenne and lemon juice. Fold in the shrimp and serve as a sauce over micro waved steamed cod fillets.

——————————

Chocolate Chip Cheesecakes

Serves:12

Ingredients:
12 1¾ inch Fluted Paper Cups
12 cup Muffin Tin
1 lg Graham cracker, finely crushed
1 x-lg Egg
¼ c Sugar
¼ t Vanilla Extract
1 8-oz pkg Philadelphia Cream Cheese or Mascarpone, softened
2 T semisweet mini Chocolate Chips

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350º F

Place the paper cups in the muffin tin and distribute the crushed graham cracker among the cups.

Put all of the ingredients, except the chocolate chips, into a food processor and blend thoroughly, or beat the egg, sugar and vanilla together with a whisk and then incorporate the cheese.

Fold in the chocolate chips and then spoon the blended mixture into the cups. Bake for 15 minutes or until the edges are set and the center is still moist.

Remove the cheesecakes and let cool. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

——————————

Now doesn’t that sound like a great beginning to our anniversary party? Cheers!

Food and Wine. What a Delightful Way To Spend an Evening!

15 Wednesday Sep 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Classics, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Special Dinners, What's For Dinner?, Wine and Food Festivals, Wine Dinners

Another great night at the Buzz in Boise. 14 September 2010 was Wine Club Night where we had an awesome dinner to accompany a great selection of Chenin Blanc and Shiraz/Syrah. Chenin Blanc is a white wine that is very versatile and can be aged for decades. Other names for Chenin Blanc are Steen – South Africa, Vouvray – France, Pineau de la Loire – France and Cremant de Loire among others. Syrah/Shiraz, both the very same grape is a deep, rich red wine. Historically, Shiraz is so called south of the equator and Syrah north of the equator. The Shiraz grape was once thought to originate in Persia, but through recent, 1999, DNA studies, it actually originated in France from two obscure grapes Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. Syrah/Shiraz is not the same as Petite Sirah and should not be confused with it. Usually the flavors and aroma include blackberry, plums and pepper but can vary greatly from region to region. It is heavily affected by climate: Warmer climates more plums and chocolate. Cooler climates more pepper. (From the Buzz tasting notes) So here is what we had for dinner and the wines that accompanied each course. My point scores are in [20], 20 points being the highest. And all this for $15.00 per person. You can’t beat it! Check with the Buzz for the date and time of the next tasting dinner. Cheers!

The plates are empty. Our stomachs are full. Our thirst for good wine is achieved. So until next time …. Cheers!

"Farm and Wine Night" At Le Cafe de Paris

23 Friday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, What's For Dinner?, Wine and Food Festivals

Oh, yes! Another delightful evening for food, fun, friends and wine at Le Café de Paris and their Farm and Wine Night. The wines this time were presented by Rod de Armond of Woodriver Cellars. With our dinner, we had a 2008 Woodriver Cellars Chardonnay, which “… delivers aromas of mango, citrus and honeydew melon with hints of French oak rounded out to a crisp, elegantly balanced finish.” (Woodriver Cellars description)

Our dinner was awesome, as would be expected from this restaurant. However, there did seem to be some “floor” confusion. I think I recognized some new faces joining the waite staff. They were good, don’t get me wrong, but one could tell that they were not precisely accustomed to the routine. They missed our salad, which was brought a little later and in more of the European style of salad after the main entree. Will this keep us from returning? Not hardly! Enjoy the photos!

Ron de Armond, Woodriver Cellars, and Robin savor the intricacies of the wine. How serious are they?

On the menu it said, “Smoked Salmon”. Actually this was lox, but just as good.
Smoked Salmon
Dill Crème Fraîche, Lemon and Croustini

Local Organic Field Green Salad
Confited Cherry Tomatoes and Lemon-Tarragon Vinaigrette.

Pork Roulade
Assorted Squash, Fried Squash Blossoms and Morel Mushroom Demi-Glace

Huckleberry Shortcake
Woodriver Red Wine and Caramel Reduction and Huckleberries

Such a great evening! If you missed this, you missed a good one. And it must be noted: We did not leave the restaurant empty handed. You see, they have a bakery on the premises. We have our breakfast pastries. Can you say Chocolate and/or Almond? Cheers!

I just received this information about the Sun Valley Food and Wine event in September 2010.

Bob.
Let me introduce ourselves. Heidi Ottley and myself – Ed Sinnott – have recently taken over and rebranded the Sun Valley Food and Wine Festival. We now call it the Sun Valley Harvest Festival. As an avid foodie in the Treasure Valley, we thought you would be interested in our event. If so, we will provide you updates and information as we get nearer to the Harvest Festival.

Ed Sinnott

Here is a link to our web site: Sun Valley Harvest Festival.

This could be a lot of fun, especially if they keep the harvest local. Get on their email list for updates by going to their web site. Cheers!
