Ah yes! Life in the kitchen in one of the hottest July’s on record at The Captain’s Shack (The Shack). But so much fun to make and serve. Some of these dishes are “eye candy”, too. Some have recipes; Some don’t. (If you want a recipe, just let me know. I’ll see what I can do.) As with most photos on this blog, Left Click them and see them enlarged. Enjoy these photos and if you make any of the recipes, let us know how you liked them. Thanks and Cheers!

16June2015_1_Pho-Nouveau_SignWe had a great experience and meal last night at the Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Nouveau, 780 W Idaho Street, Boise; (208) 367-1111 and they do take reservations. Really a superb meal. Good to meet our friend, Patty Dorr there and to have a meal with her. Good ambiance in the restaurant; good service without being “pushy”. Here is their website. Just Click This Link. There are downloadable menus on their website for you to printout or just look at. You will get a good idea of what they offer. Weather permitting, they do have a patio for your use. The parking garage is right across the street. Here is what we had and it was all good. Cheers! We will return to Pho Nouveau! On TripAdvisor I rated this restaurant 5-Stars. Which was the best appetizer or entree? Actually, they were all good – I would have any of them again!

A very good Vietnamese beer. Light and refreshing on a hot summer day. Goes great with the meal. They also carry Ravenswood wine.

Asian - Thailand Express, Chef Pong, Thailand, Thailand Express

17Jan2015_1_Thailand-Express_SignLocated at 2025 12th Ave Nampa, Idaho 83686. This was a very good surprise! Super food. Great Waite Staff. Ambiance was OK – open and more like a country cafe, not formal like Mai Thai in Boise. From their website, “Looking for mouthwatering Thai restaurants in Nampa, ID? Call Thailand Express at (208) 501-7975 and ask all about our menu that is chock-full of delicious Thai Food. Our chef has years of experience working in top tier restaurants and provides some of the best Asian food in the area. Whether you are looking for quick and easy lunch specials to share with coworkers or something a little fancier for dinner, you will find it here. We have both spicy and mild dishes for the whole family.” Here is a link to Thailand Express.
We found their food to be deliciously intriguing. Not spicy hot, unless you want it that way. Very large servings – Robin and I could have shared a bowl of the soup – no telling how large the pot size of soup was. Probably good for a family. Presentations were good. Prices were good for the quality and serving sizes. Watch their opening times as they are open twice daily, with a break in the afternoon when they are not open. “NEW BUSINESS HOURS – LUNCH —Tuesday-Friday–11:00a.m.2:30p.m., Saturday-Sunday–12:00p.m.-3:00p.m., Dinner –Tuesday-Thursday 4:30p.m.-9:00p.m., Friday-Saturday 4:30p.m.-9:30p.m., Sunday 4:30pm – 9:00pm. Monday Closed”
We rate this 4-Stars out of 5-Stars – on their FB site and their website they have a rating of 4 1/2-Stars. We will return to Thailand Express by Chef Pong. Enjoy these photos of the evening. Left-Click any of the photos to see enlarged.

Glad I tried this Thailand beer. Light and a refreshing lager that was a perfect match to the food. After a language lesson, it is pronounced "sing-ha" with a slight inflection on the "sing". Our Wait Person was delighted that we asked how to pronounce this. She was very helpful throughout the meal. Thank-You!

A Wildly Varietal Day

26 Saturday Jun 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Anthropology of Food, Oriental Food, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Special Dinners, Things To Do, What's For Dinner?

We are very lucky in Boise to have so much cultural diversity. We have, and we usually attend, the Greek Food Festival, the Russian Food Festival, Basque Festivals, an awesome wine region, the Snake River AVA, and this weekend many of the wineries had an open house, and the Obon Festival – the Japanese festival on Ontario, OR. And I know I have missed some. But we started at the Williamson Orchards, Vineyard and Winery celebrating the family’s 100 years in Sunnyslope. Cherries are ready and super sweet.

Here is Robin tasting Petite Sirah and Port from the barrell and discussing the art of blending varietals in wines with Roger Williamson.

Can’t have wine without cheese, so we made a stop at Rollingstone Chèvre farm in Parma, ID. Below is a photo of one of the products.

We are going back next week with some friends.

Ah, yes, the Japanese Obon Festival in Ontario, OR.

Here is a Bento Box that Robin and I had. Delicious!!

A very different rice dish.

The counter where one could purchase almost anything they wanted.

All of this delicious Japanese food and no sake!

But wait! We can see a place from our table where we are told they have some very good sake. They were right! We had a really interesting sake tasting.

So there you have our “day trip”. It was fun. It was interesting. It was exciting. Cheers!
