Boise Saturday Market

The Idaho Refugees – Community Supported Gardens has a booth at the Market. We have our subscription, do you have yours? An excellent Win-Win situation: We get fresh produce each week throughout the summer and the refugees get an income.

Peaceful Belly Organic Gardens, one of several well known organic gardens in the Boise area, is here at the market, also. These local vendors are really great to work with and their products – vegetables, lamb, buffalo, elk to name a few – are wonderful. If you are in Boise on a Saturday morning, plan to visit the market on 8th Street between Jefferson and The Grove.

The fountains on The Grove have a cooling and peaceful effect on all who wander by. In the summer, The Grove will increase the flow to make these much higher. It’s fun to watch the kids of all ages run through the water on a hot, summer day.

For now, that is about all. My camera is acting up so I will probably have to take it to be repaired. )-: Until then, Cheers!

No, it’s not too early to be thinking about your garden for this year. You should have some starts going right now. But I thought that some of you might be interested in this following article and resource. They do an awesome job with refugees coming to Boiseboth in growing their own garden products and selling their products at the Boise Saturday Market.

I like your “foodie” blog. I don’t know who your audience is, but maybe you want to help us advertise our CSA? We could still use some members. You can see the details at Community Supported Agriculture Or, let me know how you want to help. I’m happy to add you to our volunteers email list and put you to work in the garden if that’s what you want.

OK, so there you have some information. Do you have some spare time? Energies? Resources? Let them know. Cheers!

Pizzalchik

OK, so Robin and I were out looking for a good Ruben Sandwich – you know, with the right Russian Dressing, and not Thousand Island dressing, and a good Jewish Rye toasted bread. Good luck. But we are on the trail of one. It’s just not open on Sunday or Mondays. Look for us on Wednesday. We will be there with a Reuben Sandwich on our minds! It comes rated by Behind The Menu.

Since we didn’t find the Reuben Sandwich, we stopped in at the local Oriental Market. That sounds like a good switch. It was. Just more expensive. But, we are still hungry. So we decided on the Pizzalchik on Gary Lane at State Street. If you go to Our Review Page, and scroll down, you will find the link to Pizzalchik. Read the review, and then visit the restaurant. Their chicken is awesome. Their salads are such a blend of flavors! They are awesome! I have had their pizza and it is wonderful – build your own with fresh ingredients. All types of some very super micro brewery and IPA beers on tap. Wines from all over and sodas. I urge you to give it a try. Let them know we sent you. Here is a link to more information – PizzalChik on Urbanspoon Cheers!

2010 Not Good To 2 Restaurants

03 Sunday Jan 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Local Markets, Restaurants

2010 has started out to be “not good” for two restaurants in the Boise Area.

First, was the total destruction of the Barbacoa Restaurant on Park Center in Boise to an early morning fire. As the Idaho Statesman reported, “Barbacoa on the lake at ParkCenter wasn’t just a restaurant, it was an experience – part art gallery, part museum with sensational ice-tinis and guacamole prepared fresh at your table.

At about 5 a.m. Saturday, an employee cleaning the restaurant noticed smoke and called 911.

The fire started in the attic, spread quickly and collapsed the roof soon after firefighters got inside, a Boise police spokeswoman said. No one was injured as firefighters recognized the danger and moved outside.”

And then there is the closing of Rachel K’s Bistro in Eagle. Sadly, we only found time to visit the restaurant only once in the past month, and that was an awesome and delicious visit. We wish Rachel and her husband the best in their future endeavors and hope they will keep us informed as to what they are doing.

Lava Lake Ranch – Lamb Source

03 Thursday Dec 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Food, Lamb, Local Markets

I really do love it when a supplier of products follows this blog and then submits some very pertinent information. Such is the case with an email I received today from Cheryl Bennett from Lava Lake Ranch outside of Sun Valley, Idaho. Here is what she said. Thanks, Cheryl!!

Lava Lake RanchI believe I have shared a glass of wine with Robin somewhere along the way….it may have even been a plane seat and we talked about dancing or something….the dust collects in parts of my brain and I can’t remember. I must say, your blog has grown a lot since the three or four years ago that I met Robin. We will start following you and we have started blogging and tweeting too (who would have thought that). Just as a reminder:

Lava Lake Ranch is an artisanal producer of 100 percent grass-fed certified organic lamb. The lamb is sustainably raised on a family-owned ranch in the Pioneer Mountains, near Sun Valley, Idaho. Dedicated to the proposition that what we eat matters, we raise our lambs sustainably, humanely, without antibiotics or growth hormones, and never place them in feed lots. The lambs graze only on the ranch’s certified organic range and drink mother’s milk. Their diverse diet of lush, fragrant range grasses and herbs makes our lamb tender, delectable, and highly nutritious.

Another part of the story that sets our ranch apart from others, is that all profits from the sale of Lava Lake Lamb help fund vital land and habitat conservation efforts over nearly a million acres in south-central Idaho. This is land conservation on a huge scale and just within this year, we’ve been rewarded with three national awards to honor our efforts: the Cecil D. Andrus Leadership Award for Sustainability and Conservation, the US Forest Service’s National Award for Outstanding Achievement in Rangeland Management, and the Bureau of Land Managements Rangeland Stewardship Award. We’re working on a number of conservation projects – everything from restoring wetlands to living with wolves through innovative predator avoidance techniques. You can read more about those efforts on the website and on our scientific research website.

We have entered the newest frontier in social networking and now have a blog, Lava Lake At WordPress, are Tweeting at Lava Lake and are on FaceBook. We encourage you to join up, start doing the same, and start widening the net of followers.

Susan, thanks for the kind words….you flatter me!!

There is some great information on local Idaho lamb! And as I said before, I really do like the follow-up that Lava Lake Ranch gave us. Let’s support them and their products. Cheers!

A visit to Pizzalchik, Boise

To say that today was a big waste of time, would not be true! So I won’t say it. Robin and I had the very distinct pleasure of meeting and having lunch with Michael Boss of Behind The Menu at Pizzalchik on Gary Lane in Boise. Some really unique pizzas and salads. Try a Tequila and Lime Roasted Prawn Salad with Asian Noodles or one of the fantastic House Salads with a Balsamic Dressing! Or a Neapolitan Pizza – thin crust, tomato and cheese. Or Build Your Own – ground beef, garlic, sun dried tomatoes, red onion and basil. And then there is always wine to go with the meals or beer or Cokes. Here are some slides.

Want something different along the lines of a pizza? Try the Pizzalchik. It’s well worth the trip. And try one of their salads while you’re there. Cheers!

Please support Jerri’s Old Fashioned Pie Shop and Bakery. Wouldn’t a fresh Pecan Pie or a fresh Pumpkin Pie go great at Thanksgiving?

New Products, Great Comments!

25 Sunday Oct 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Classics, Condiments, Food, Local Markets, Oils

In this mornings email – after I finally figured out that some of our clocks are on the “George Bush Time Manipulation Scheme” – I received this note from Rudy’s. We do appreciate the kind words:

Hi Bob & Robin,
I just found your blog and noticed your mention of Rudy’s.
Thanks! I’ve also put a link in our email newsletter about you.
Cheers!

Susan Ettesvold, CEPC

If you look in the sidebar, you will find a link to Rudy’s and, if you are ever in Twin Falls, please do stop in and say “Hello” to them and tell them you found their information on this blog. No, we don’t get a monetary “prize” for listing them, or any of the locations listed for that matter!

And since I am on this particular train of thought, Robin and I went to the Boise COOP – that could be trouble – yesterday to look for raw vinegar to start some White Wine Vinegar. And we came upon Extravaganzo Gourmet
Foods
sample table. Oh my! Some really awesome infused olive oil/grapeseed oil blends. You can check out their web site by clicking Here and find some really interesting products and locations, other than via the web, where their products are sold. The owner, Tom Stephens, who we met at the COOP, is pleasant and very helpful

The first of two products that we sampled and are excited about is pictured here, a Blood Orange Infused Oil that would be great with chicken or seafood. Or maybe in some Chinese or Japanese foods. A delightfully intense essence of orange permeates throughout the oil. A little oil will go a long way!

And, if you really know us, you know if it has garlic in it, we’ll probably try some – ice cream, fried, oil infused – and this Garlic Infused Oil is terrific! But again, a little will go a long way. And I’m thinking pasta, lamb or paella.

We do encourage you to try these oils. Being a “Foodie”, you owe it to the mindset. Go to their web page and check them out. Cheers!

Snake River AVA Saturday Events

03 Saturday Oct 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Local Markets, Things To Do, Wine Tasting

I am truly sorry for the lateness of this post! For events like this a good practice is 3 – 5 days in advance. For wine dinners I would say at least 7 – 10 days. But here are the articles. Hope you make them before the BSU Football game. Maybe pick up some wine to help UC Davis make it through the evening? Oh well!!

3-Horse Ranch Vineyards
Invites you to join us at
“HarvestFest”
this Saturday Oct. 3rd

Location: 1065 Winding Creek Road (Old State St.), Eagle, ID
Time and Date: Saturday, October 3rd, 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
What to Bring: $20 along with a healthy thirst! (for adults over the age of 21, kids are free)
Attire: Seriously? It’s Idaho need I say more? (although it is outdoors so layer it up)
For More Information: 208.938.3010 or zach@willowcreekgrill.com

Willowcreek Grill and Eagle Magazine bring a signature event to Eagle. Bag Pipers will kick off the festivities, and the event will feature local food, beer, wine, music and fashion until 9:00 p.m. Some of the area’s favorite bands including Audio Moonshine, Tina and the Big Belt Buckle Band and Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles will get the crowd rocking to their own brands of blue grass, rock and folk.

There will be a fall feast of Brats, grilled onions, grinders, and of course Willowcreek’s signature Sweet Potato Fries with Chipotle Mayonnaise. The “Fest” food will be as fresh and local as they can make it. Seven breweries will be on hand pouring their signature fall brews and 3 Horse Ranch Vineyards will serve a selection of their finest wines.

A special twist that HarvestFest will bring is an element of fashion–models for local boutiques Coco Couture, Mimi Marie, Club and Ruby Lou will present the latest styles for fall in fashion shows that will run throughout the day and into the night.

Tickets are $20 and include tasting of each one of the featured beers and wines. Additional beverages are available for $3.00 each and food items range from $3.00 to $5.00. Raffle tickets for a variety of prizes will also be available for purchase.

And we also received this from Cinder Wines.

Harvest is here!
Come visit
Cinder Winery!

with Cinder…

We’re right in the middle of harvest and would love for you to stop by and see the grapes being transformed into wine. Over the next 2-3 weeks there will be a lot to see as we bring grapes into the Urban Winemakers Cooperative. We have our tasting room open every Saturday from Noon-5pm, so please drop by and bring a friend. You can sample the wines of Cinder, Vale and Syringa….plus get a glimpse of the harvest or “Crush” activities. One of the coolest things to see are the red wines fermenting and it will only last a few weeks.

Here is a Map To Our Winery, The Urban Winemakers Cooperative

Seems like every Tuesday from 5:30pm until dark, Edwards Greenhouse has a Market where you can purchase fresh and local produce and food products. Fact is, this would make a very enjoyable evening; Listen to a variety of music, visit the 12 or so booths, maybe purchase a dinner and some wine or bring your own picnic, lawn chairs and relax. Here are some photos. Enjoy.
