Sun-Valley-Mustard-Logo-LargeWe don’t normally write about a specific product on this blog, but here is one exception. Sun Valley Mustard is an awesome product and well worth the money spent. It is produced right here in Idaho. Sun Valley, Idaho to be exact. This mustard has several different variations. Some sweet. Some spicy. Some so very smooth. Some varieties are: Spicy Sweet, Chardonnay, Amber Ale, Sweet Garlic, Dill Mustard and Hot Jalapeno. These are good with fish, beef, lamb, pork, white meat, sausage meats, dips, sauces, dressings and corned beef to name but a few. There is a more specific listing in the article, linked below. 22Feb2013_1a_Bluebird_Bleubird_MenuWe were lucky enough to be in downtown Boise around lunchtime and stopped in for the first time at Bleubird at 10th and Bannock. We met our Grandson Chris there for lunch. They make some fantastic sandwiches. They look good and they taste good. The soup that we had, Tomato Basil was every bit as good at Berryhill and Co. (That statement will open some eyes and make your heart skip a beat!)And of all things, they use Tupelo Honey on some of their sandwiches, like their Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. The photo to the left is actually their menu on the wall.

Hopefully, you get the idea. Look at the stemware. Nothing better than an IPA from an old fruit jar! It gets busy at noon, so plan to wait for a while. Get there a little early, 11am or so, and you should be fine. Well worth the wait, though. The food was very good and taste was excellent. They have house made drinks and teas, superb local beers and some wines are available. Enjoy! And let them know you saw this review. Cheers!

Boise Food Truck Rally – Oct 26

Another good Food Truck Rally in Boise. The location keeps moving around and this one was held in the lot at 15th and Bannock Streets. I think a good location. The trucks all were in really good positions and the patrons had ample parking. Maybe this could be a more “permanent” location. But I have heard rumors of an apartment building being constructed here. But we have heard that before for this location. Several times. We’ll just have to wait and see. From Brown Shuga Soul Foods, Fresh Made Gumbo and Smoked Turkey Legs. Yvonne, owner of Brown Shuga, is especially known for the way she prepares the turkey legs. They are awesome. If you want one at this affair, you must go early. She usually sells out.

This is a Boise Cheese Steak from Saint Lawrence Gridiron, the red food truck in the opening photo. Different. Not a Philly cheese steak by any stretch of the imagination. “Where’s the beef?”, to coin a phrase. And I have no clue as to what that sauce was. The beer is a Payette Brewery IPA. Very good.

So there you have the Boise Food Truck Rally for October. These rallies are usually held on the 4th Friday of each month at rotating locations. They open at 5:00pm and usually run through 9:00pm. If you want to buy beer – there are other beverages available – make sure you have ID. They do card you! Everyone must show some ID. Everyone! Hopefully, I’ll see you at the next one. They really are fun and there is a good variety of food available. Follow the Food Truck Rally on FB. I will try to get the information for the next affair in a timely manner. Those in charge, should advertise somewhat better and use the available advertising media, ie. – blogs, etc. Cheers!

It’s been an interesting eating day. And super moon day. And Kentucky Derby day. Here is what we had for dinner tonight. Wild Rice Salad, Fruit Bread and Fiddlehead Ferns with Ramps, Asparagus and Mushrooms. All from the Boise Saturday Market. Well …. Mostly – The bread was not. Wonderful!!

Boise City Council approves new rules for urban agriculture, but a vote on river jumping will wait

The issue has inspired lots of passion and plenty of discussion. During a Boise City Council public hearing, several members of the public spoke in favor of the urban agriculture ordinance. No one spoke in opposition.

• Urban farms are now allowed in all zoning districts, along with community supported agriculture (CSAs), where customers buy shares of produce for pick up during growing season. The new rules also allow such operations to sell small amounts of produce.
• Urban farming retail spaces are limited to 500 square feet. New parking and overhead lighting is prohibited. Business hours are restricted to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Produce stands have been operating with six month permits. Now, they’ll be able to apply for yearlong permits.

It’s Time To Start The Garden!!!

Well, yes! Start those plants indoors or in a small portable greenhouse or any where where the seeds and plants get plenty of sunlight and air movement. Keep them damp, not wet! And here is some information for planting using Household Food Left-Overs. The article, lists 5 Foods You Can Grow From Left-Overs. Foods like celery, ginger root, cloves, sweet potatoes or onions. The web site is called Garden Swag. Another place that you may be interested in is City Girl Farming which has this information to share. (There is a link in the sidebar, too.) Growing Food From Kitchen Scraps

There’s all sorts of growing experiments you can do with your kids just by using food from your kitchen. The possibilities are nearly limitless…take some time to take stalk of the food supplies you have, and decide which ones you’d like to experiment with. To give you an idea of the kinds of things you can plant, here’s a quick list:

1. Whole seed spices (like coriander seed, mustard seed, etc.)
2. Seeds from fruits and vegetables (like potatoes, green peppers, apples, etc.)
3. Snack food seeds (like popcorn and raw nuts, etc.)
4. Fresh herbs and spices (like garlic and ginger root, etc.)

Most of these seeds and roots will grow best by starting them in water. Also, many of them can be transplanted out into the garden, if you’d like. (Here is one suggestion. There are several more on the links above.)

Potato
Keep a potato around until some eyes start growing on it. Slice a piece of the potato off where the eye is, and put it in a cup with water covering the potato, but not the eye. Soon, you’ll have a potato plant sprouting up and you can plant it in the garden, or just watch it grow in the cup (no potatoes will grow in the cup, but the plant will grow and look good.)

Enjoy these two garden resources – there are many more on the web, just search for them – as it is starting to look a lot like Spring! (I noticed our Forsythia is in heavy bud. Wow! Such a great evening!! If you missed this Boise Food Truck Rally, you may have another chance. Try to reserve the 2nd (second) Friday of each month for this event. The venue will change, so keep watching this blog for more information.
Here are some of the Food Trucks that were represented: Brown Shuga Soul Food, Archie’s Place – Soup and Joe’s, Riceworks, B29 StrEATry and A Cupcake Paradise. And we had liquid refreshment from Payette Brewery, one of the sponsors. The other sponsors were the Boise Weekly, KRBX 89.9 FM, Northend Organic Nursery and The C.O.T. Be sure to support the sponsors and of course the Food Trucks when you see them around town. What a great evening. And just look at some of this food. And the prices … They were good. Ground Hog Day brings us to the Fettuccine Forum to be held in Boise in the Rose Room.
“The February Fettuccine Forum will look at the Year of Idaho Food at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the historic Rose Room at 718 W. Idaho St. in downtown Boise. Doors open at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A no-host bar and free appetizers are available. For more information, call 433-5670.Amy Hutchinson, Guy Hand and Janie Burns will lead a conversation about the “Year of Idaho Food — and What’s on the Menu for the Future.” ”
