Today was the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl here in Boise at the BSU Stadium. So, we needed to have something for our small Tailgate Party. Maybe potatoes? Yes, but with what? How about with my Mom’s Chili Con Carne Modified over a good, baked potato. (The photo to the left is the dish in the crockpot!) Wow! It was great! and it did bring back some memories of her making the chili. I just had to modify it because Robin can not eat sweet green peppers. So I modified Mom’s recipe and used Poblanos that I fire roasted on the grill. And most of this was locally grown: the beef, potatoes, onions and peppers. The tomatoes were not. Here are some photos with the Chili over a fresh Baked Potato. Enjoy!

We have a friend on FB that asked folks to post a favorite recipe for an appetizer for all to share. So many recipes …… So little time.
Here is a link to our online recipe file and more particularly Our Appetizer File. There are many recipes for appetizers here. Enjoy and hope you find one you like. Have a great Holiday Season!

Such a good dinner last night. We finally got to use some of the chukar that Dr Mofid gave us. Thank-You, Afshin, it was delicious. We still have some left along with the pheasant. To the left is the plated dinner and below is what was on the menu. If you want the recipe, Click Here. You can also use Cornish Game Hens or chicken. Enjoy these photos of the process. Be sure to view the photos in full screen.

Robin had been asking – in her soft and gentle way – for chicken wings. And believe it or not, I don’t know where to find any in Boise where one can purchase a “bucket” of them. I know there has to be a place, I just don’t know where. I can see another assignment coming up. Anyway, I decide to make some. And here is the Recipe that I came up with. This recipe is also posted in the Recipe File as listed above. Try it and see what you think. It is really easy to do. The photo here is the end result. Left-Click and view this full screen. And the casserole dish? A Pampered Chef. They are awesome baking dishes and they carry a Lifetime Warrantee. Don’t be in the kitchen without one … or two …. or three. Enjoy!

So it looks like the debate continues about Irish Soda Bread. Actually, I really don’t know that you can call it a debate. Maybe a “misunderstanding” about what “real” Irish Soda Bread is. Maybe from the Irish Soda Bread Web Site we can get some information. Here is some information that may help.
The Un-Bread
If your “soda bread” has raisins, it’s not “soda bread! It’s called “Spotted Dog” or “Railway Cake”! If it contains raisins, eggs, baking powder, sugar or shortening, it’s called “cake”, not “bread.” All are tasty, but not traditional Irish Soda Bread!Traditional Irish Soda Bread
If one searches the internet using the term “Traditional Irish Soda Bread” about 63,500 sites are listed. 98% of them aren’t even close to being traditional. Google “Irish Soda Bread” and you will find 126,000 sites.Would “French Bread” (15th century) still be “French Bread” if whiskey, raisins, or other random ingredients were added to the mix? Would Jewish Matzo (unleavened bread) used to remember the passage of the Israelites out of Egypt still be Matzo if we add raisins, butter, sugar, eggs, and even orange zest? So why is traditional “Irish Soda Bread” (19th century) turned into a dessert and labeled “Traditional Irish Soda Bread?” OK, maybe you don’t like the analogy, but you get the point!
So there’s a start on the debate, or maybe the finish. Have a good glass of Belhaven Ale or a Guinness Stout and look at the web site for more detailed information and maybe even a recipe or two. Be sure to look at the White Soda Bread Recipe that is on the site.
But for the time being, the Traditional Irish Soda Bread has “… wheat flour, white flour (do not use self-rising as it already contains baking powder and salt), buttermilk (pour in a bit at a time until the dough is moist), salt, bicarbonate of soda and butter if you want to deviate a bit … The best flour to use is “soft wheat” which is called “pastry flour” or “cake flour” today in the US. If you want to try using Irish flour, may I suggest Odlums.” (www.sodabread.info) Enjoy and thanks Joe Levitch for the reference to this site!!!

I received this information yesterday. This might be a good time to purchase some items for your kitchen.
“We’re saying Good-bye to all our devoted customers and friends who have supported us these last few years during economic difficulties. Our doors will close for good on Sat, January 29th. We gave it out best shot and now Steve and I have decided to go and do the things we never had time to do before. Thank you and be sure to come in and check out our remaining inventory. Everything is reduced 40 and 50 percent. We also have furniture and fixtures — everything must go!”
The Pottery Gourmet Kitchen is located at 811 W Bannock in Boise. The sale starts today, 12 January and runs through the end of the month. We are sorry to see them close. They have some awesome Polish pottery items. Cheers!

And that it was at Flying Pizza Pizzaria on State Street in Boise. Margaret and Robin standing below the Flying Pie Pizzaria sign that announces her day! Even though it was rainning, 0.19″ per hour, it was a great party and we thank Flying Pie Pizzaria for the opportunity to make Robin’s Special Pizza. But here, look at the photos and see the fun all of us had. And when you are in Boise, stop in at Flying Pie Pizzaria for a pizza, salad and fantastic beer!
Here is Robin – my Robin – getting her instructions on what is going to happen.
But then there was more than one Robin who arrived for “Their Day“. Actually, there were four Robins that showed up. How great!!
Then there is always the prep work to making any dinner or pizza or whatever.
Fondle the pizza dough!
Throw the pizza to get the most stretch in the dough.
Putting the goodies on the pizza!
Marine and Robin. Robin’s pizza is in the center.
Jalapeno pizza!
Marnie, Robin and Maddy!
Margaret, Chris’ friend Nate, Chris, Marnie, Robin and Maddy.

Yessireee Bub! It’s Robin’s Day at Flying Pie Pizzaria tomorrow, Sunday! So what does that mean? She gets to make her own pizza!! And we get to party, Dutch Treat, of course. We will be at the store on State Street in Boise, tomorrow, Sunday at 2:00pm. We have 6 other people coming. We’d love to have you there to join in on the festivities. Maybe even Joe and his family can make it. Maybe Joe? We’d love to see you all there.
If you can, 2:00pm at the Flying Pie Pizzaria, 4320 State Street, Boise – just as the graphic on the left says.
It’s been a pretty good day today – The University of Delaware defeated Georgia Southern for the NCAA Div 1 semifinals and now they go to Texas on 7 Jan 2010 to play Eastern Washington and that should be a great game for the NCAA National Title. And Troy is sticking it to Ohio 43-14 in the 4th quarter. (I thought Ohio had all these Hot-Shot football teams that don’t like to play the “little guys”. See what happens?) Fresno State had their heads handed to them. ): DircTV is back on the air and my phone finally found the satelite. So, if you can make the pizza party tomorow, that will be great, too. Maybe fill the shop? Cheers! And bring your cameras.
