03Nov2015_1g_Richards-Cafe-Vicino_Red-WineWell, tomorrow at this time who knows where I’ll be. Open heart surgery to start at 0530. Do people actually move around at that hour? But I am so thankful for Marnie, Mac, Carlynne – Robin’s sister who came to help all the way from Delaware – Chris and my Super RN’s who are always in my thoughts – Robin, Roli and Cristi. They will hold my hand as will my sister Peggy and my brother Alex, although they will be long distance.
But one must eat first. Carlynne took us all out for pizza last night at Flying Pie Pizza and it was super, although I think the service is really getting slooooooow. The pizza is still great; The service is not. Thanks Carlynne for this treat. I also came across this chart which helps to figure out recipes if you must change the size and servings. Bhut Jolokia Pepper ScaleYes, Hot! And probably one of the hottest is the Bhut Jolokia from India. I lived in India – in the state of Rajasthan in a town called Pilani – for a year in 1955 and don’t remember this spice. There might be a reason for that. ‘Bhut Jolokia’
The hottest pepper on the planet, ‘Bhut Jolokia’ measures a breath-robbing 1,001,304 SHU! Hailing from India, the “ghost chile” is tough to grow. “‘Bhut Jolokia’ peppers are stubborn and not for the novice grower,” says Coon. “They are an interspecific hybrid—meaning they are a cross between two different species, which doesn’t happen very often. That’s what makes this one unique and probably contributes to its crazy hotness.” Joe Arditi says, “This is the pepper than can send you to the emergency room.” [Organic Gardening]

The bhut jolokia is a hundred and fifty times hotter than a jalapeño. Gastromasochists have likened it to molten lava, burning needles, and “the tip of my tongue being branded by a fine point of heated steel.” Yet, at more than a million Scoville heat units—the Scoville scale, developed by the pharmacist Wilbur Scoville in 1912, measures the pungency of foods—the bhut jolokia is at least 462,400 SHU short of being the world’s hottest chili pepper. There are several good sources for information on hot, spicy peppers, Organic Gardening as quoted above, and The New Yorker and an article called Dept. of Agriculture Fire-Eaters The search for the hottest chilli in the November 2013 issue. But before we go much further, just where did the chilli pepper come from?

“Chili pepper” is a confusing term, another of Christopher Columbus’s deathless misnomers. (Columbus and his men classified the spicy plant they had heard being referred to in Hispaniola as aji—farther north, in Mexico, it was known by the Nahuatl word chilli—as a relative of black pepper.) Chilis belong to Capsicum, a genus of the nightshade family. Horticulturists consider them fruits, and grocers stock them near the limes and cilantro. Most chilis contain capsaicin, an alkaloid compound that binds to pain receptors on the tongue, producing a sensation of burning. Sweet banana peppers are usually neutral. Pepperoncini (approximately 300 SHU) produce just a flicker of heat, while cayennes (40,000) are to Scotch bonnets (200,000) as matches are to blowtorches. Capsaicin is meant to deter predators, but for humans it can be too little of a bad thing. Because capsaicin causes the body to release endorphins, acting as a sort of neural fire hose, many people experience chilis as the ideal fulcrum of pain and pleasure.

In February of 2011, Guinness confirmed that the Infinity chili, grown in Lincolnshire, England, by a former R.A.F. security guard, had surpassed the bhut jolokia by more than sixty-five thousand SHU. Only two weeks later, a Cumbrian farmer named Gerald Fowler introduced the Naga Viper. At 1,382,118 SHU, it was, Fowler said, “hot enough to strip paint.” He told reporters, “We’re absolutely, absolutely chuffed. Everyone complains about the weather and rain here in Cumbria, but we think it helped us breed the hottest chili.” He posed for the Daily Mail wearing a sombrero. [The New Yorker]

Maybe Flying Pie Pizza here in Boise will extinguish their Habanero Pizza and have an Indian Bhut Jolokia Pizza or for the brave, maybe a Trinidad Scorpion Pizza. Maybe. I won’t eat it. Guaranteed! But I bet there are some here in town that may want to try.

And that it was at Flying Pizza Pizzaria on State Street in Boise. Margaret and Robin standing below the Flying Pie Pizzaria sign that announces her day! Even though it was rainning, 0.19″ per hour, it was a great party and we thank Flying Pie Pizzaria for the opportunity to make Robin’s Special Pizza. But here, look at the photos and see the fun all of us had. And when you are in Boise, stop in at Flying Pie Pizzaria for a pizza, salad and fantastic beer!

Yessireee Bub! It’s Robin’s Day at Flying Pie Pizzaria tomorrow, Sunday! So what does that mean? She gets to make her own pizza!! And we get to party, Dutch Treat, of course. We will be at the store on State Street in Boise, tomorrow, Sunday at 2:00pm. We have 6 other people coming. We’d love to have you there to join in on the festivities. Maybe even Joe and his family can make it. Maybe Joe? We’d love to see you all there.

If you can, 2:00pm at the Flying Pie Pizzaria, 4320 State Street, Boise – just as the graphic on the left says.

It’s been a pretty good day today – The University of Delaware defeated Georgia Southern for the NCAA Div 1 semifinals and now they go to Texas on 7 Jan 2010 to play Eastern Washington and that should be a great game for the NCAA National Title. And Troy is sticking it to Ohio 43-14 in the 4th quarter. (I thought Ohio had all these Hot-Shot football teams that don’t like to play the “little guys”. See what happens?) Fresno State had their heads handed to them. ): DircTV is back on the air and my phone finally found the satelite. So, if you can make the pizza party tomorow, that will be great, too. Maybe fill the shop? Cheers! And bring your cameras.

"It’s My Day!"

Who is this? Actually, it’s my brother, Alex (love those argyle socks!!), and me in Pilani, India in 1957. Ahhhh. Ok. So what? Just two angelic 14 and 15 year old boys.

Here in Boise, there is one awesome Pizza Shop – Flying Pie Pizza. (There is a hot link in the sidebar of this page.) Still. So what? Every day they have a program called “It’s My Day”. If your name is Robin, Christopher, Connie, Tom, or a thousand other names, it is your day! You get to stop by and make a pizza. From scratch. With guidance. Fresh ingredients. Fun. Fun. Fun! So today, 27 October, the sign said, “If you were in India, it’s your day!” You have to prove it. I did. With this photo and several others. It’s all in fun and it was fun! It was great to have Joe Levitch there with us to celebrate “It’s My Day”. Thanks, Joe. So look at these photos and enjoy. I will explain what kind of pizza I made. You make your choice, within reason!

Thank-You all of the Flying Pie Pizza workers who helped us do this. It was absolutely fun. And we were able to eat our delicious pizza. It was good! Loved those Fire Roasted Tomatoes that gave the pizza a wonderful under tone flavor that added to the overall taste. And Joe, what can we say. Just Thank-You for joining us on our Fun Day! And if you are in Boise or you are going to visit Boise, try the Flying Pie Pizza. You’ll love it. It’s one of the best in the Northwest. Cheers!

Everyone in Boise likes Flying Pie Pizza! Even our American Eskimo dog. I don’t know what it is about the Samoyed strain of genetic material, but these “guys” love pizza and can become very aggressive for a piece, a slice or the whole thing! It would be better if they did not get any. And the hotter the better!
