Le Café de Paris "Bon Anniversaire"

16 Friday Apr 2010

Such an adventure! Another great epicurian adventure! On 15 April, Robin and I went to the Le Café de Paris Anniversary dinner! Look at the menu (Left Click the graphic to view full screen) If you missed this one, come join us on 22 April at 6:30pm for another awesome Wine Dinner. You will have to make reservations. Look at the dinner photos.

The music was really good as usual.

The Poiters sparkling wine was a great opener. Made from Folle Blanche and Sauvignon Blanc. Refreshing.

The 2008 Poligny Montrachet was superb with the dinner – all phases of the dinner!

To open the dinner, a wonderful Canard de Rillette (Duck Rillette) with a Red Pepper Gastrique. Made from 100% shredded duck meat and cooked in duck fat and wrapped in puff pastry. This was delicious!

The Salade de Haricots Verts (Green Bean Salad) with Roasted Hazelnuts, Roasted Tomatoes, Fresh Basil and Crème Fraîche. Now this was delicious!! (Sorry the photo is not as good!) The beans were so crisp, yet tender. And the Crème Fraîche just hit the spot with the basil.

Coq au Vin (Red Wine Chicken), Free Range Chicken with Fresh Pasta and Grilled Croutons. I don’t know that I have ever had a “bad” Coq au Vin. This was no exception. It was delicious and if I were to have a special catered meal, this would probably be on the menu. It’s just that good!!

You just think I’m done! Look at the Saumon Pave with Roasted Mushroom Consommé, Moral Mushrooms and Saffron Potatoes. Everything in this dish was a dream. I can’t say anything else.

One of the great things about Le Café de Paris are the pastries and the breads. This Des Quatre-Quarts – Berry and Chocolate Salad, Fresh Mint and Whipped Cream dessert was the ultimate. The warm sponge cake with the mint, blueberries and chocolate was an epicurian delight!

I wish I could cook like this. (The tears are rolling down my chubby, little cheeks.) Cheers! Don’t miss the next one.

"The Perfect Reuben" – Not Yet, Part II

15 Monday Mar 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Food, Food Prep, Food Trivia, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Restaurants, The Perfect Reuben

Yesterday, Pi Day, 3.14, Robin says, “The Plaza Grill” is having a Reuben special for lunch. That’s all I needed. Read about their Reuben, #7.

The Reuben Sandwich Challenge Scoring

Rated on 1 to 5-Stars, here is how we rate the several places in Boise that serve a Reuben Sandwich. 1-Star is enough for this year and a 5-Star is one that meets the criteria.

1. Barbaccoa – Big thick slabs of meat, no rye toast, they used bread, and soggy from an over abundance of kraut. No grilled onion. Rating: 1-Star

2. Donny Mac’s – Rye toast was weak on the rye, heavy on the 1000 Island dressing. Sloppy to eat because of the really wet kraut. The pastrami was good. Raw onions. Rating: 2-Stars

3. Cucina di Paolo – Yea! Russian Dressing. Good pastrami and not overly salty. Great kraut. Did not notice any grilled onion. Good rye toast, although it was Marble Rye. I would prefer a straight Jewish Rye, Deli Rye. I always like a good Jewish Kosher pickle with my Reuben. None of these places had that. Rating: 4-Stars

4. Seasons Bistro – Wow!! We’ve got a foot race. Homemade Russian Dressing, as was Cucina di Paolo. Good pastrami as was Cucina di Paolo. Great kraut that is special ordered and, in my opinion, better than Cucina di Paolo. Good rye, that I actually tasted the caraway seed, although it was the Marbled Rye!!! I told Rachael Hurn, Owner, that I really would like to give her the 5-Stars for this sandwich, but I couldn’t. She asked, “Why?” And I told her, “No Jewish Kosher deli pickle.” She said she would go get me one. Too late. But, Rachael does know – as did Paul at Cucina di Paolo – the difference between a Reuben and a Rachael Sandwich. She has both on the menu!!! Rating: 4½ – Stars

5. Westside Drive-In – I was disappointed. The pastrami was poorly heated. And the dressing was not Russian. I think it was 1000 with horseradish. The kraut was very good though. He also uses marbled rye. No pickle!!! And I’m really getting tired of the marbled rye. Why not a good deli rye? Sorry Lou.
Rating: 3½ – Stars

6. Willowcreek Grill – Most of their lunches that we’ve had here have been pretty good. Great salads and a good clam chowder. Sorry, but I can not say the same about their Reuben Sandwich. Where’s the pickle?? The taste just was not there. The pastrami was just OK. But the kraut at least perked it somewhat. The rye – mediocre marbled at best. The sauce – OK, but nothing to write home about. The cheese is hard to find. It looks impressive, but the taste is just not there. Sorry.
Rating: 3 – Stars

7. The Plaza Grill at the Owyhee Hotel Yea!!! Look at that green “thing” on the sandwich. A Pickle! Yea! And out of 7 Reuben establishments tried, this is the first pickle! But then, from their menu, “Grilled Reuben on Rye – Grilled on rye with cured lean corned beef, sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing and melted Swiss cheese” $9.95. Did I see Thousand Island dressing? Sure did. Wrong dressing, remember? Should be Russian dressing. Too bad. And, I don’t think that the kraut was grilled long enough, either. It was still pretty runny. Can’t get rid of that Marbled Rye either. There’s got to be a bakery in Boise that makes their own rye bread – Deli Rye bread that tastes like rye or caraway. I was glad to see the pickle – but sad to see the Thousand Island dressing.
Rating: 3½ – Stars

Are we really closing in on “The Perfect Reuben Sandwich in Boise“? It looks like a difficult job, but someone has to find Boise’s Best. Or am I being a traditionalist? To coin a phrase, “It’s tradition!”, or so it’s been said. If I had a fiddle and if I could play it, I’d shout “It’s Tradition!” from the roof top. At this point in time, the Seasons Bistro (Eagle) and Cucina di Paolo (Boise) are taking the lead. They have set the bar pretty high. Cheers!

Still Looking! "The Perfect Reuben"

06 Saturday Mar 2010

You just think that I have given up. Actually have 2 more places to look at. And most of you know of my bias for Westside Drive-In, Chef Lou. Most of his food is awesome! Great Rib-Eye on Fridays and Saturdays! But his Reuben, sorry, but it misses the mark. Where is the Deli Pickle? No one offers them that I have found. But, here are the standings so far.

The Reuben Sandwich Challenge Scoring

Rated on 1 to 5-Stars, here is how we rate the three places in Boise that serve a Reuben Sandwich. 1-Star is enough for this year and a 5-Star is one that meets the criteria.

Rating: 3½ – Stars

Here is another place that Robin and I tried in Eagle. Good burgers! Robin had a great Ahi Tuna sandwich. They make their own slaw and their house salads are huge. And what did I see on the menu? Reuben Sandwich with “… our own homemade Russian dressing.” Was that the gauntlet? Is there a pickle? A deli pickle? Deli rye? Good kraut? Well, I guess the next time we are in Eagle – next week – we will, or better yet, I will have to try this one. The menu description looks close. But what about the taste? This is tooooooooooooo much fun!

We really are closing in on “The Best Reuben Sandwich in Boise“. Cheers!

Ahi Sushi Bar, Eagle

20 Saturday Feb 2010

We were teaching in Eagle today and had some time off for lunch. We decided to change our lunch menu to something different – at least culturally! We went to the Ahi Sushi Bar, 1193 E. Winding Creek Drive #104, Eagle, Idaho 83616. (208) 938-FISH or E-Mail them. You can also find them on Facebook.

According to their website,

Ahi Sushi Bar offers a relaxed casual environment where you can dine with friends and family and enjoy the pleasures of fresh sushi.

Their California Roll (Crab, Avocado and Cucumber)was great. Robin had a Fresh Water Eel – Unagi which was also great. If you are in Eagle, be sure to stop in and have some wonderful sushi. Be sure to check their website for complete menu items! They do offer beer and wine, along with a variety of teas and soda pop. Let them know you saw them on this blog. Cheers!

The "Reuben Sandwich" Challenge!

06 Saturday Feb 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Classics, Food, Food Trivia, Restaurants, Seasons Bistro, Things To Do, Wine and Food

Nope! It’s not over. We found another place. But, let’s first look at the “ground rules”.

Reuben Sandwich
1. Reuben made with Corned beef
2. Rachel made with pastrami
3. Both made with
a. Toasted or grilled Jewish rye or Marbled rye
b. Kraut or slaw but with some type of cabbage
c. Meat – See above
d. Russian Dressing – usually home made
e. Grilled onion
f. Swiss cheese

So, what we “usually” call a Reuben, is actually a Rachael. But, I bet if you went into a restaurant and asked for a Rachael Sandwich, they’d say, “Huh?” And if they don’t, get one!

2010 Not Good To 2 Restaurants

03 Sunday Jan 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Local Markets, Restaurants

2010 has started out to be “not good” for two restaurants in the Boise Area.

First, was the total destruction of the Barbacoa Restaurant on Park Center in Boise to an early morning fire. As the Idaho Statesman reported, “Barbacoa on the lake at ParkCenter wasn’t just a restaurant, it was an experience – part art gallery, part museum with sensational ice-tinis and guacamole prepared fresh at your table.

At about 5 a.m. Saturday, an employee cleaning the restaurant noticed smoke and called 911.

The fire started in the attic, spread quickly and collapsed the roof soon after firefighters got inside, a Boise police spokeswoman said. No one was injured as firefighters recognized the danger and moved outside.”

And then there is the closing of Rachel K’s Bistro in Eagle. Sadly, we only found time to visit the restaurant only once in the past month, and that was an awesome and delicious visit. We wish Rachel and her husband the best in their future endeavors and hope they will keep us informed as to what they are doing.

——————————

For those not familiar with the Barbacoa style of cooking, here is a brief explanation.

Except for cochinita pibil, one of the common characteristics of Mexican barbacoa is that marinades are not used and sauces are not applied until the meat is fully cooked (for examples of Mexican marinades, see carne de chango and carne al pastor). Pork cooked in this manner is generally referred to as carnitas rather than barbacoa.

Throughout Mexico, from pre-Mexican times to the present, barbacoa (the name derives from the Caribbean indigenous Taino barabicu) was the original Mexican barbecue, utilizing the many and varied moles (pronounced “mol-ehs”, from Nahuatl molli) and salsa de molcajete, which were the first barbecue sauces. Game, turkey, and fish along with beans and other side dishes were slow cooked together in a pit for many hours. Following the introduction of cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and chickens by the Spanish, the meat of these animals was cooked utilizing the traditional indigenous barbacoa style of cooking.

Barbacoa has its origins in all the countries that Tainos inhabited, not just Mexico. The Tainos were pre-Columbus Indians located in the Caribbeans.

So there you have it. Just another place to visit over the Holiday Season and, in this case, for New Year’s Eve. Good luck!! Cheers.

"The Season’s" Greek Dinner

20 Sunday Dec 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants, Seasons Bistro

On Thursday, 17 Dec, we went to The Season’s in Eagle for their Greek Dinner. Sorry, but it did not meet expectations. I grew up with some very close Greek friends; participated in the Greek Neighborhood “Greek Days”; each summer attend the Boise “Greek Festival” and do like Greek food very much. This event at The Seasons fell short. I missed that “authentic” Greek flavor – the strong Greek oregano taste and other spices that are traditionally used in this style of cooking. But, I must say that their use of cucumber in the dishes was very good – as was the Corn Dip, which is not Greek (Thanks Rachel!!). The Lemon Rice Soup was awesome and could be used to help fight off any flu!

Spices from Greece like sesame; white sesame; Machlepi; and Cumin are also highly thought of by renowned international chefs and the most valuable and expensive spice, red saffron, is cultivated in Greece … Generations of Greek cooks have focused on many that have now become essentials of traditional Greek cooking.
Herbs: chamomile, marjoram, mint, oregano, sage, basil, thyme, rosemary, dill, fennel, celeriac, flat-leaved parsley, coriander, bay leaves.
Spices: Cinnamon, pepper (black and white), cloves, allspice, anise, cardamon, nutmeg, cumin, paprika, pink, saffron, sesame and white sesame.

However, this is not enough to keep us from returning to The Seasons. We know what they can do and we know how good the restaurant can really be. Maybe they were overwhelmed with the crowd that came in. Maybe something happened in the kitchen. I don’t know, but I know they can do better and I look forward to returning. Our original review of The Season’s can be found by Clicking Here. Cheers!
