fire storm, great friends, pot luck, two fires, vegetable platter

11Aug2013_2_Captains-Shack_Fire-Storm_Clouds-ColorGreat food and great friends gathered at The Buzz in Boise to convey our condolences to Cristi and her family for her loss. We were sitting outside and the fire storm from about 50 miles east of Boise and 25 miles north, presented an imposing image of the vastness of the fire. This morning on NPR I heard were the combined two fires was about 120,000 acres. Yuk!
As we gathered, we shared food as a means of bonding our friendships. Everyone who attended, was asked to bring some type of pot luck. And, if you desired, bring a wine. We took a 2010 Fujishin Family Cellars Viognier, a corn pie and grilled fresh herbed zucchini. (Photos are below) Others brought all kinds of wines, BBQ pork, beans, soup, vegetable platter, hot artichoke dip, brownies and different breads. It was a good gathering to show the extent of our friendship for Cristi and her family. Here are a few more photos. Left-Click any of the photos to see enlarged.

Asparagus Soup, flatbread pizza, food

The Buzz - Sideways and Bottle Shock TourAnother great wine club dinner at the Buzz last night. A blind tasting this time. Interesting and fun! I know. In Boise during the summer months, folks have many adventures to follow and attendance at these events are low. Even when Robin and I were dancing, the summer dance events had extremely low attendance. But, everyone must still eat and have liquid refreshment. Why not at the Buzz for one of these events? $15.00 per person that includes 6 or so wines and a full, five course dinner, is a great price. And just think of all the new information you will gain and the new friends you will meet. Here is what we had and what you missed. Enjoy …. We did! Sorry for some of the photo quality, but I forgot my camera. Had to use my phone.
We started off with Cristi’s Choice, a 2007 Lan Rioja Crianza that was good, but not as good as the 2009 Alsace Classic Pinot Gris that she offered. You can find my review of these two wines on my Vivino page. Download it – it is free – to either your IPhone or Android and then follow me. It’s a great and fun little program that allows you to keep a record of the wines you try. I even use it to keep track of some of the beers I try, although the program is not setup to track beer. Vivino App for either IPhone or Android.
As a sample of a blind taste, Cristi had us work with this wine. 2010 Tin Roof Merlot 13.5% alc. not bad, as all the wines tonight were scored on the high side. This went well with the pizza – I saved a little. [18]

Flatbread Pizza and California Roll

Flatbread Pizza and California Roll
2008 Renwood Barbera
14.5% alc. Barbera is not one of my favorite wines. But went well with the pizza and California Roll. [18]

Chilled Asparagus Soup (Awesome)

Chilled Asparagus Soup
(Awesome)
2011 Toad Hollow Chardonnay
13.5% alc. One of the better wines and matches for tonight. This wine went extremely well with this delicious soup. [19]

Citrus Salad (This was a great salad. Cristi said she will post the recipe for the dressing. Loved it!)

Citrus Salad
(This was a great salad. Cristi said she will post the recipe for the dressing. Loved it!)
2011 Wentz Sauvignon Blanc
13.0% alc. Good Sauvignon Blanc with this salad. The citrus and the wine were perfect. [19]

Fish Tacos with Hominy and Bean Salad

Fish Tacos
with
Hominy and Bean Salad
2011 Garnet Pinot Noir
13.0% alc. Not the best match with the tacos. [17]

Great match with the dessert. Full of almond and delightful. [19]

19April2013_1_Wine-MeetUp-Le-Cafe_AppetizersRobin wrote this good review of the Wine Meet-Up Group Party at Le Cafe de Paris in Boise yesterday. The photo here is of some of the appetizers we had. (Here’s a link to a good Slide Show.)

“Christian presented some diverse and reasonably priced wines from Mediterranean France – new to many. From the refreshing 2011 Picpoul Blanc- a perfect wine for oysters and other shellfish to an oak aged white with great body – Doria 2009 from Luberon in the Languedoc, great with the artichoke dip. A beautiful 2012 100% Aramon Rose’ paired nicely with pate’ and will satisfy many summer culinary creations. The 2004 La Mascaronne from Provence shows the new blending styles of a Cabernet mixed with Rhone grapes – all the rage now for a serious lamb dinner wine and finishing the tasting with the huge 2008 Orca from old vines in Ventoux is a great match for BBQ’s yet to come.

A bit crowded, but just the right mix of interesting people at our end of the table. The appetizers were creative crostini with a fresh tomato and basil mix, wonderful bread from Gaston’s Bakery in the basement with a hot cheesy artichoke and spinach dip, I enjoyed a slice of Mathieu’s especially flavorful pate’ with cornichons and mustard and who stole my cheese? By the time the cheese plate arrived at our end of the table, there were a few craisins and nuts and only two skinny slices of Brie!

We ordered a salmon plate and a roast stuffed pheasant for dinner, but it took such a long time to arrive, that our seats had become nearly numb from the very uncomfortable chairs. We had out meals boxed ‘to go’. We love Mathieu and his concept of fine French dining, however he needs to buy some more comfortable chairs and stabilize the rocking tables.”

April Schedule at the BuzzWow! It was great to see a Full House last night. The first in a while. This year, Cristi’s theme for the Wine Club Dinners is “Wines From Around the World” and she started out with the wines from Argentina. Awesome wines. Awesome dinner. Great job, Cristi!! And I would be remiss if I did not mention the coupons that are available for these dinners. It’s like buying 6 dinners and getting one free! Robin and I have the year covered!! A great buy, if you so desire. Just ask Tommy or Cristi for the details.
Below are some photos of the night and the wines we had to accompany the food. A top score is [20]. Enjoy and Cheers!

Faina and Provoleta
(Nutty, peppery flatbread made with chickpea flour.)
2012 Fabre Montmayou Rose
13.0% alc. Great with these appetizers. Best wine of the night. [19] $13.00

Locro
(Navy bean and corn soup. Superb.)
2008 Duriguti Bonarda
13.9% alc. Went well with the spiciness of the soup. [18] $14.00

Sorrentinos and Fugazzeta de Verdura
(Round ravioli with ham sauce)
2010 Martino Old Vine Malbec
14.0% alc. Good old vine wine. Smooth and supple  [19] $16.00

Pasta Frola and Torta Negra Galesa
2011 La Yunta Torrontes
12.5% alc. Good with the desserts, but not my favorite. [18] $12.00

BSU Blue and Orange Sky
It was a beautiful fall day/evening in Boise, except for the Oregon State fans. Even the sky reflected its support of BSU. Look at those colors! BSU won the football game 37 – 24. But it was a hard fought game for both sides. BSU is now 3 – 0 on the season. Normally, we would watch the game at home. But the hype started at 7:00am here in Boise and went right through 9:00pm. ESPN had the Gameday Program here. So, we decided to watch the game at one of the local bistros.
