Ah, yes! Once again we hear from “Rudy’s” and their trivia for this week.

This Week in the History of Food & Drink

August 11, 1858: Dutch physician Christiaan Eijkman was born. Eijkman discovered that beriberi was caused by a poor diet (a lack of vitamin B1), which eventually led to the discovery of vitamins.

August 12, 1856: James Buchanan (‘Diamond Jim’) Brady was born. American financier and philanthropist Brady was known for his collection of diamond jewelry, and for his gargantuan appetite. He was known to eat 6 or 7 giant lobsters, dozens of oysters, clams and crabs, 2 ducks, steak and desserts at a single sitting. He would also mix a pound of caviar into a baked potato. George Rector, a New York restaurateur said he was ‘the best twenty-five customers I ever had.’

August 13, 2004: Julia Child died 2 days before her 92 birthday. American cooking authority, cookbook author, TV Cooking show host, etc. During World War II, she also worked for the OSS from 1941-1945 (The OSS is the forerunner of the CIA).

August 14: National Creamsicle Day

August 15, 1912: Julia Child was born.

August 16: National Rum Day Day

August 17, 1986: A bronze statue of a pig was dedicated at Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Trivia to Ponder

Thanks to Kate and Paul Sudmeier for these pieces of trivia. Interesting.

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn’t just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:

1. In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

2. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, “bring home the bacon.” They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

3. Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

4. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

And just for fun ……
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

And be sure to Wash first! Robin found this somewhere. Seriously funny! Seriously stupid!

The inscription on the metal bands used by the U.S.
Department of the Interior to tag migratory birds has been
changed. The bands used to bear the address of the
Washington Biological Survey, abbreviated as “Wash. Biol.
Surv.” — until the agency received the following letter
from an unhappy camper: “Dear Sirs: While camping last week,
I shot one of your birds. I think it was a crow. I followed
the cooking instructions on the leg tag and want to tell you
it tasted horrible.”

The bands are now marked “Fish & Wildlife Service.”

Let’s not try this one! Cheers!

May 4, 1494: Columbus landed at Jamaica and met the Arawak Indians. The Arawak used Jamaican pimento (allspice) to season and smoke meat (usually pigs), the foundation upon which Jamaican Jerk developed.

May 5: Cinco de Mayo!!

May 6:.National Crepe Suzette Day

May 7,1660: Isaack B. Fubine of The Hague, Netherlands, received a patent for macaroni.

May 8, 1842: Emil Christian Hansen was born. He was a Danish botanist who developed new methods to culture yeast. He revolutionized the beer industry, and proved that there are different species of yeast. He refused to patent the method, but instead made it available for free to other brewers.

May 9, 1785: The beer-pump handle was patented by Joseph Bramah.

May 10: National Shrimp Day!

April 13, 1796: The first elephant to be brought to the U.S. arrived from Bengal, India. It was exhibited in New York, and its diet was described as: “thirty pounds of rice besides hay and straw…. all kinds of wine and spiritous liquors….and every kind of vegetable; it will also draw a cork from a bottle in its trunk.”

April 14, 1939: ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ by John Steinbeck was published.

April 15: National Glazed Ham Day

April 16, 1956: On the ‘I Love Lucy’ show, Lucy stomped grapes in Rome, and wrestled with another female grape stomper. An inspiration for future ‘food wrestling’ entrepreneurs. Actually, this is one of the funniest sitcom episodes ever made.

April 17, 1810: Lewis M. Norton of Troy, Pennsylvania was issued the first U.S. patent for pineapple cheese.

April 18: National Animal Crackers Day

April 19, 1995: The Supreme Court ruled that alcohol content could be listed on beer labels, overturning a 1935 law which had prohibited it.”

Feb. 9, 1854: Coffee County, Georgia was founded.

Feb. 10, 1944: Author Frances Moore Lappe was born. She is the author of the best selling ‘Diet for a Small Planet’ (1971) which indirectly encouraged a vegetarian diet, by demonstrating that raising animals for food was an extremely wasteful use of resources. Also: ‘World Hunger: 12 Myths’, ‘Food First’, ‘Taking Population Seriously’.

Feb. 11: Paul Bocuse, French chef, was born at Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or, France. He is known as one of the founders of ‘nouvelle cuisine’.

Feb. 12, 1791: Peter Cooper was born. American inventor and founder of the ‘Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.’ He also obtained the first American patent for the manufacture of gelatin. In 1895, a cough syrup manufacturer, Pearl B. Wait purchased the patent and developed a packaged gelatin dessert. Wait’s wife, May David Wait named it Jell-O.

Feb. 13, 1967: The Beatles single ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ is released.

Feb. 14: Happy Valentine’s Day-Don’t forget the chocolate!

Feb. 15, 1758: Benjamin Jackson advertised mustard for sale for the first time in America. The advertisement was in the Philadelphia Chronicle, and claimed Jackson was the first and only manufacturer of mustard in America”

Catherine de Medici – influence on Haut Cuisine de France 1533. from Florence, Italy although “Roman cuisine was fundamentally barbaric” Antoine Careme [1783-1833] Francois Pierre La Varenne – mushroom duxelles, roux. La Patissier Francais 1653, Le Confiture Francais 1664, Le Cuisinier Francois 1651 and L’Ecole des Ragouts 1668.

Antoine Careme – [1783 – 1833] architectural creations – pastries, puff paste, preserved fruits, creams and sherbets. Chef de cuisine for Talleyrand and the Russian Alexander to Baron de Rothschild. Le Patissier Pittoresque 1815, Le Patissier Royal Parisien 1825. He was the first to classify the sauces of his time into a system of four families: Espagnole, Veloute’, Allemande and Bechamel.

Auguste Escoffier – [1846-1935] “ King of Chefs, and the Chef of Kings” famous for many dishes – Peches Melba. Le Guide Culinaire 1902 as The Escoffier Cookbook, still in use today. He reorganized the sauce tree as the foundation of “Mother Sauces”: Espagnole, Bechamel, Veloute, Tomate and Hollandaise. Followers founded an International Food and Wine Society dedicated to education and experiences.

The French Paradox – keep it simple, keep it fresh and keep it inventive. Drink wine to accompany your meals.

And from Mark Twain we hear, “The secret to success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.”
