Orange Roughy and Spanish Pasta

12 Monday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Seafood

The other night we wanted some seafood for dinner. So we made up some Orange Roughy. A very mild white fish that can be totally flavor-covered if one is not careful. If you poach it, be careful. This was poached and then the tomato and herbs were added for 2 minutes. Long enough. Then, add some pasta to the tomato blend and let it heat through. The tomato sauce has 1 can Fire Roasted Tomatoes, fresh Corn (not from our garden), Greek Oregano, Chive, Shallot, light Garlic, Coriander and Parsley in it. (All herbs from our garden) The photo shows pretty well what you end up with. Don’t ask for the recipe …. there isn’t one. It’s called Cooking By Taste. I really like the pasta done this way. Almost like a hot salsa. Cheers!

Meals From CSG Gardens

10 Saturday Jul 2010

It is always nice to have access to some absolutely wonderful fresh – and I mean fresh – produce! Yea for summer! Yea for the Idaho Refugees – Community Supported Garden (CSG) and the work the folks do to keep us supplied in these fresh vegetables. Thank-You! That’s not to say that I, we, don’t appreciate the work and the products available from the Boise Saturday Market. This is greatly appreciated too, proven by the longevity of the market. There are several CSG gardens in the Boise area, and maybe in your home town, too. I urge you to support their efforts. Here are some photos of the CSG that we belong to. Enjoy.

The people and the produce of the Idaho Refugee – Community Supported Garden. We do get our monies worth of produce. I have even put in an order for a large supply of red/pink/green tomatoes at the first frost. Great to make Green Tomato Relish.

So here is what we did with some of the CSG produce: Potato Salad with Garden Lettuce – made with fresh potatoes, carrots, garlic, onion, chive and fresh lettuce. A side of Green Peas. Herbs for the Kokanee Poached in 2009 Indian Creek Viognier (an awesomely fruity and great wine): parsley, lemon thyme and chives.

And finally, the same Potato Salad as pictured above, Infused BBQ Pork Chops and Fresh Sliced Tomatoes!! Yea, finally …. fresh tomatoes.

Well, there you have it. Cheers and Happy Fresh Vegetables!

Common Ground Farm, Surprise Valley, Boise

08 Thursday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Boise Adventures, Common Ground Farm, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Things To Do, What's For Dinner?

So Wednesday July 7 was a busy day for us. Falcon Watch in downtown Boise all morning, blog photos to work on, Fox TV interview and the Common Ground Farm opening in East Boise in Surprise Valley. This is one more in a growing community garden theme for the refugees coming into Boise. They grow the produce and make these picnics and we attend and buy dinner and fresh vegetables. They are productive and earn an income and we get to eat some fantastic cultural food. Look at these photos for a sampling of the event.

Rice Pilaf and Kabob. Made right here in the picnic grounds and it was very good.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know the name of this dish, but it too, was prepared fresh at the picnic.

Here is Michael Boss, Behind The Menu, tasting fresh honey right off of the comb. It was delicious!

Some of the crowd that was there. You can see the garden in the background and it is very large. They are going to put in another 5(?) acres across the street.

Michael Boss and his wife, Patrick and Barbara Mahre and Robin. I’m taking the blurry (Oops) photo!

Cheers and maybe we will see you at the next one. Every Wednesday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

Another Community Garden

06 Tuesday Jul 2010

Before we look at Another Community Garden, lets look at another Alley Garden. Here on Madison Ave we have an ingenious garden setup. They even have a greenhouse. This garden is constructed in the parking lot of a business in one of the islands within the lot. Really looks nice!

Here from Facebook and Behind The Menu, we have –

Looking to support a good cause AND have a good time tomorrow? How about making the grand opening of Common Ground Farm in SE Boise’s Surprise Valley. Here are the details from the CG folks. See you there!

Who: YOU!

What: A Grand Opening Party to Thank YOU all and to announce that the “CG farm stand is open to the public” and we…’ve got loads of great produce (and great people).
Live Reggae Music from Candread & RiZing ReZistance (above), food, fun – bring your families and some food or a picnic. Or taste food here from a few refugee vendors cooking some of their specialties. Bring some, taste some, will be great. Nigmat will have fried rice and kebabs for sale. Devi may make momos. And our bakers may make some pastries….bring something you love and share.

When: Wednesday, July 7th from 4pm – 8pm.
Why: Because we like you (most of you) and we think it will be great fun. AND, we want to send a huge shout out to all of those who have helped give Common Ground the wings to fly.

Where: 4750 S. Surprise Way in Surprise Valley (SE Boise) – next to Eastwind Community Church on the lawn / at the Common Ground farm.
This event is open to the public, anyone is welcome!

Thank you all for all that you do to make this community a far better place to live.
Bike over, walk over, drive over or stroller over if you’re one of the smaller CG family members – stay for a bit or hang the whole time – we hope you all feel welcome and as excited as we do – going to be a blast!

Maybe we’ll see you there. Who knows. But if we do show up, look for the guy carrying the camera. Cheers!

"the Buzz" Bistro Opens

06 Tuesday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Appetizers, Bistro, Party Time, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Things To Do, What's For Dinner?, Wine and Food

On July 5, 2010 the Buzz started their new menu and style. Monday through Saturday after 4:00pm they will be serving Bistro Style dinners. Monday – Thursday: 4pm – 9pm; Friday and Saturday: 4pm – 10pm. Closed Sunday. Their menu is displayed below. Along with the bistro, they are also serving a wide variety of affordable wines. Here are some photos of the first night. Cheers!

Here is the menu for the bistro. (Left Click to see a larger picture) You can see that the prices are great and there is a wide variety of choices. Robin and I spent $32 which also included a very good $12 bottle of Rosé.

Robin is enjoying the relaxing atmosphere of the Buzz. On the weekends (Friday and Saturday), they usually have live music from 7 – 9.

Cristi suggested this fine bottle of French Rosé. She was right. The wine went very well with the food selections we made. Light and fruity and not expensive.

Crab Nachos. A delightful change from your standard nachos. These come with tortilla chips topped with crab, blend of cheeses and black olives. Big enough for two!

Flat Iron Steak Salad with Thai Dressing. I really liked this. (Robin and I shared each others selections) The steak was done just perfect – slightly pink as you can see. This is served with chopped romaine, red onion, cucumber and tomato tossed in a Thai dressing. This is an excellent salad.

Tuna Salad with Fennel. Again, not your everyday style of tuna salad. The fennel gives it an extra boost. Served on romaine leaves and the tuna has been blended with fennel and cucumber and seasoned with tarragon. Wonderful!

Unusual Lemon Meringue Pie. Yes … yes … yes! The pie was made with puff pastry. Cristi – You have a winner here!

——————————

If you want a relaxing and fun evening out, the Buzz Coffee and Wine and Bistro is a good place to go. Take your friends. Hope to see you there sometime. And don’t forget their 2nd Tueaday and Wednesday wine dinners. Awesome!

First Thursday In Boise – July 1

02 Friday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Boise Adventures, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Things To Do, What's For Dinner?

During the summer, there are just so many things to do in Boise. The First Thursday celebrations are no exception. We were looking for a specific art exhibit, but were really disappointed when we found it. So, we had to find a place to eat. We ate at the Cazba, a Mediterranean restaurant – Greek, Egyptian, Lebanon style food. That is where we met Lynette Berriochoa from Cypress Tours, tours of food and wine in Italy.

Here are photos of what we had for dinner.

A huge Greek Salad that Robin and I shared.

Some really great Greek wine. Light and fruity that went very well with our dinners.

A dinner of Moussaka that was big enough for two!

A good evening! Cheers.

"the Buzz" – New Menu Preview!

On 27 June, Robin and I went to try the new Buzz menu along with about 20 others. Such a great time! Such good food. Cristi asked for comments. She got them. Most were positive suggestions, constructive critiques, like cut the portion size down or the spices need to be increased a little. Starting July 7, 2010, the Buzz will have their new menu and it really looks good! Here are some photos of the evening. Cheers! Thanks Cristi and Tom for including us in the preview!

A Wildly Varietal Day

26 Saturday Jun 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Anthropology of Food, Oriental Food, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Special Dinners, Things To Do, What's For Dinner?

We are very lucky in Boise to have so much cultural diversity. We have, and we usually attend, the Greek Food Festival, the Russian Food Festival, Basque Festivals, an awesome wine region, the Snake River AVA, and this weekend many of the wineries had an open house, and the Obon Festival – the Japanese festival on Ontario, OR. And I know I have missed some. But we started at the Williamson Orchards, Vineyard and Winery celebrating the family’s 100 years in Sunnyslope. Cherries are ready and super sweet.

Here is Robin tasting Petite Sirah and Port from the barrell and discussing the art of blending varietals in wines with Roger Williamson.

Can’t have wine without cheese, so we made a stop at Rollingstone Chèvre farm in Parma, ID. Below is a photo of one of the products.

We are going back next week with some friends.

Ah, yes, the Japanese Obon Festival in Ontario, OR.

Here is a Bento Box that Robin and I had. Delicious!!

A very different rice dish.

The counter where one could purchase almost anything they wanted.

All of this delicious Japanese food and no sake!

But wait! We can see a place from our table where we are told they have some very good sake. They were right! We had a really interesting sake tasting.

So there you have our “day trip”. It was fun. It was interesting. It was exciting. Cheers!

Two Restaurants Reviewed

30 Sunday May 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Food, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants, Seafood

Back around the first of May, I received an email from Danielle Dussult, Account Associate at MS&L Worldwide for Bonefish Grill, a marketing firm, asking us to review the Bonefish Grill and another comparable restaurant. For doing this, she sent us two $25 gift certificates, one for the Bonefish Grill and the other for Red Lobster. She also sent a nice fish spatula. We thank her for these items. Look at the review for Bonefish Grill and Red Lobster that will correspond with these photos. I will start with the Bonefish Grill photos.

Here is the Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer. This is really a good appetizer.

I had the Diablo Shrimp Fettuccine. This was very good, but I think it had too much sauce on it and it was a little spicy. I think it would have been better with less sauce.

Robin had the Long Fin Tilapia. The tilapia tastes like a fresh water fish – Gout de Terrior. And the shrimp tasted like the Song of the Sea – Chansons del Mare. That is very difficult to do in Boise.

We took pour daughter and her friend with us. He had the Fish and Chips and he said they were very good. She had the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos and said they were spicy hot.

We shared a Key Lime Pie for dessert. I did not get the intense lime flavor, nor did Robin.

The Crème Brûlée was really very good. Smooth and creamy as it should be. The caramelized sugar was good.

——————————

Here are the photos from the Red Lobster.

For an appetizer, Robin and I had the Wood Grilled Shrimp on Brochette. A good appetizer.

I had a combination platter called Seaside Shrimp Trio. It had Walt’s Favorite Shrimp, which was a little too salty, Shrimp Scampi, good, and Shrimp Linguini Alfredo, very rich. Not as good as the Bonefish Grill, Diablo Shrimp Fetticine.

Robin had the Chef’s Grilled Tilapia. She said that the flavor of the tilapia was hidden by the soy sauce. It was not as good as the Bonefish Grill.

The Apple Crisp had very little apple in it and the cake base was overwhelming.

The Key Lime Pie was more like a NY Cheese cake. It was heavy and not light.

So there you have our opinion. The rankings?

Red Lobster – 2 1/2 Stars
Bonefish Grill – 3 1/2 Stars

Our reviews are based on the following statement and have been for many years now.

We will endeavor to critique these restaurants on (1) Ambiance, (2) Food Presentation, (3) Food Quality, (4) Service and (5) Cost. We will rate these places from one (1) to five (5) stars. A 1-Star restaurant deserves the comment, “That’s good enough for this year” and a 5-Star restaurant is superb and deserves a note home to Mom. There is nothing wrong with a 3-Star restaurant – We would take friends and relatives to a 3-Star restaurant and we will return to a 3-Star restaurant.

There was one other contributing factor to the Red Lobster loosing this contest: We had to ask for table settings and napkins. To me, this is a huge mistake and should never happen at any restaurant. But then too, the food was just OK. You can see all of Our Reviews by following the link.

Berryhill and Co, Boise

Berryhill and Co, one of Boise’s better restaurants. Here is their Chicken and Risoto Chicken with Fresh Vegetables. We wnt there for Sunday Brunch and we were extremely pleased. Please look at the link for our Restaurant Review. The next several photos are from their brunch. If going for brunch, you may want to call for reservations.

Soup, gravy and roast beef.

Fruit, wilted spinach, French toast, scrambled eggs, quiche, bacon, potatoes, bangers and pasta.

The Goodie table!

The end result of the tables of food! A good meal for $14.00 per person.
