04May2013_1_New-Boise-Market_BoothsThe New Boise Farmer’s Market at 10th Street and Grove in downtown Boise, held their Grand Opening today – it rained the day they had originally scheduled the Grand Opening. Today was crowded, no rain and sunny, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the food, the produce, the beef and buffalo and lamb and chicken. Fresh herbs are also available along with fresh tomatoes and tomato plants. Do you like goat cheese? See the Rollingstone Chevre booth for fresh made goat cheese. All types. The French and English form bouillabaisse comes from the ProvençalOccitan word bolhabaissa, a compound that consists of the two verbs bolhir , to boil) and abaissar , to reduce heat, i.e., simmer.
There are at least three kinds of fish in a traditional bouillabaisse, typically scorpionfish (fr: rascasse); sea robin (fr: grondin); and European conger (fr: congre); and it can also include gilt-head bream (fr: dorade); turbot; monkfish (fr: lotte orbaudroie); mullet; or silver hake (fr: merlan) It also usually includes shellfish and other seafood such as sea urchins (fr: oursins), mussels (fr: moules); velvet crabs (fr: étrilles); spider crab (fr: araignées de mer) or octopus. More expensive versions may add langoustine (European lobster). Vegetables such as leeks, onions, tomatoes, celery and potatoes are simmered together with the broth and served with the fish. The broth is traditionally served with a rouille, a mayonnaisemade of olive oil, garlic, saffron and cayenne pepper on grilled slices of bread.
What makes a bouillabaisse different from other fish soups is the selection of Provençal herbs and spices in the broth; the use of bony local Mediterranean fish; the way the fish are added one at a time, in a certain order, and brought to a boil; and the method of serving. In Marseille, the broth is served first in a bowl containing the bread and rouille, with the seafood and vegetables served separately in another bowl or on a platter.

09Jan2013_1b_Janjou-Patisserie_Front-SignRobin and I treated ourselves to a great experience. We went to the Janjou Pâtisserie at 1754 W State Street, Boise this morning. (I have added their link in the sidebar and a hot link there also.) This is some of the best Quiche I have eaten, and I have had some good Quiche. Goat Cheese and Leek Quiche ($8.99). I do not like goat cheese but this was awesome and I will get it again. The Bostock pastry ($3.50) was awesome with just a hint of rose-water. Robin had an 8 oz Mocha coffee ($3.65) and I had a 12 oz Americano ($2.95). Both of these coffees were great and went very well with our “treats”. Husband and wife team, Chuck Gabbitas – Owner and Moshit Mizrachi-Gabbitas – Owner/Chef are doing a super great job for only being open for 7 days. For an eatery of this type, they definitely rate a 4-Star (out of 5) and maybe a 5. We will have to return. They are planning to offer in the future, maybe wine, soups and sandwiches. That would be interesting. Their website is Janjou Pâtisserie and is worth looking at. Call your order in and pick it up at the pâtisserie. Here are some photos that Robin took. Boise Food Truck Rally and Dolly’s Bar Grand Opening

An exciting time tonight with, at least for me, two special events going on. First was the November Boise Food Truck Rally held in the parking lot of the brand new Whole Foods Store, that is actually not open until next Wednesday, November 14. Here is some of the crowd that fought the cold winds and light snow. Yes, it did snow lightly! Enjoy these photos! It was good to see my friend, Yvonne, at the Brown Shuga Soul Food truck.

Great to see Tammy and Mike McClure of Indian Creek Winery. Their spiced wine was great. Glad to hear that harvest went well for you Mike.

 

Then there was the Grand Opening of Dolly’s Bar at 1108 Front Street in Boise. Small, but cozy! Thanks Karyn for inviting me to attend your opening. I do hope the business goes well and grows. Here is the sign that was out front along Front Street. Rather difficult to see at night. It should stand out during the day.

Another good Food Truck Rally in Boise. The location keeps moving around and this one was held in the lot at 15th and Bannock Streets. I think a good location. The trucks all were in really good positions and the patrons had ample parking. Maybe this could be a more “permanent” location. But I have heard rumors of an apartment building being constructed here. But we have heard that before for this location. Several times. We’ll just have to wait and see. From Brown Shuga Soul Foods, Fresh Made Gumbo and Smoked Turkey Legs. Yvonne, owner of Brown Shuga, is especially known for the way she prepares the turkey legs. They are awesome. If you want one at this affair, you must go early. She usually sells out.

This is a Boise Cheese Steak from Saint Lawrence Gridiron, the red food truck in the opening photo. Different. Not a Philly cheese steak by any stretch of the imagination. “Where’s the beef?”, to coin a phrase. And I have no clue as to what that sauce was. The beer is a Payette Brewery IPA. Very good.

So there you have the Boise Food Truck Rally for October. These rallies are usually held on the 4th Friday of each month at rotating locations. They open at 5:00pm and usually run through 9:00pm. If you want to buy beer – there are other beverages available – make sure you have ID. They do card you! Everyone must show some ID. Everyone! Hopefully, I’ll see you at the next one. They really are fun and there is a good variety of food available. Follow the Food Truck Rally on FB. I will try to get the information for the next affair in a timely manner. Those in charge, should advertise somewhat better and use the available advertising media, ie. – blogs, etc. Cheers!

This is really an interesting process and experiment. It looks like it is working. What will I do with the tomatoes on the top? Keep them trimmed to the make-shift cages. Should be interesting.

It’s 9:30! Ring the bell. And she did and the second week of the Saturday market was opened! I talked for a short while with Garrett Goldberg, Square Companies, a wine storage company, and he said the Guy was supposed to be coming to the Market. Guy Hand from NPR. I told him I know Guy and to tell him he is late and that I had already been here and gotten some great photos. Here are just some of the vegies that are available. The new header photo was taken at the Market just this morning. I also get our eggs here from Meadow Lark Farms, Janie Burns. Great source for local eggs, lamb and chicken. Cheers!

Crooked Fence Beer Tasting at Salt Tears

It has been a while since we have been to Salt Tears Coffee House and Noshery, 4714 W State St., Boise. Last night they held a beer tasting for the Crooked Fence Brewing Company at 5242 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, Idaho. We really had some good beers and the food to accompany it was well matched.

This is the weekend special menu. Live music every Thursday and and Saturday with Fridays being a different fish meal. Use the scan code to go to their site.

Jennifer and Danny, Manager of Salt Tears (Thanks Jan), are stocking the Finger Foods to go with the beer.

Andy Leathers of Crooked Fence Brewery. Story goes that the fences in the meadows of Sun Valley are “crooked” and that is where the name of this brewery came from. Andy  previously worked at Widmer Brewery in Seattle.
