23Apr2013_1_10-Barrel-Opening_Building-FrontFinally. After all this waiting, 10 Barrel Brewery in Boise opened! The photo here is of the front of the pub on Bannock Street at 9th, across from the Chinese restaurant, Yen Ching.
The restaurant space inside iss large and open. The noise level is tolerable. It is busy noise, not loud music or TV. That will work for us. And when the weather changes, they will probably open some very large doors and have an area where one can site on the sidewalk, but be served inside. Left-Click the photo on the left to enlarge and look at the right side of the photo. You will be able to see the stools.
And yes, they serve Apocalypse IPA. In my not so humble opinion (IMNSHO) one of the best, if not The Best, Ipa’s made. We had a Caesar Salad and a 10 Barrel Burger and the IPA went very well with both. Good beer, like good wine, is meant to be consumed with food. It might be made with barley and other grains, but it still needs food. It is nice to report too, that they try their best to use local products, i.e., the Acme Bakery for their buns and rolls. Enjoy the photos posted here that I took on our First Visit. There will be a Second Visit and probably more. Hope to see you there. Well worth the trip. The food is good and the beer is …………. well ………. Super! Cheers and Enjoy!

A really super burger and a great bun. The French Fries, though, were a little salty and came close to over powering the burger. I let the Wait Staff know. The beer in the background is an Apocalypse IPA $4.50

Overall, a good experience. Out of 5 Stars, probably one of the better pubs in Boise so I rate it a 4 Star pub. Great job, 10 Barrel! They have a complete menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pizza and sweets. Stop in and say Hello for us and let them know you saw this article here. Thanks and please VOTE above. Cheers.

15Dec2012_1_Moms-Chili_In-Pot-CookingToday was the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl here in Boise at the BSU Stadium. So, we needed to have something for our small Tailgate Party. Maybe potatoes? Yes, but with what? How about with my Mom’s Chili Con Carne Modified over a good, baked potato. (The photo to the left is the dish in the crockpot!) Wow! It was great! and it did bring back some memories of her making the chili. I just had to modify it because Robin can not eat sweet green peppers. So I modified Mom’s recipe and used Poblanos that I fire roasted on the grill. And most of this was locally grown: the beef, potatoes, onions and peppers. The tomatoes were not. Here are some photos with the Chili over a fresh Baked Potato. Enjoy!

Here is the chili plated with a Stella and a Belhaven to accompany the dish.

And plated with just a Belhaven. A very creamy smooth and slightly sweet Scottish Ale.

A very typical Fall day. Cool. Rain. Snow – in the mountains where it belongs. Good football games:U of Delaware lost, but a good game. Boise State University beat Wyoming 45-14. They are now 7-1 and Coach Peterson is 80-7. But better than that, is this meal we had after the games. Delicious! Enjoy.

Fresh Made Sauerkraut with Apples

Crooked Fence Beer Tasting at Salt Tears

04 Wednesday Apr 2012

It has been a while since we have been to Salt Tears Coffee House and Noshery, 4714 W State St., Boise. Last night they held a beer tasting for the Crooked Fence Brewing Company at 5242 Chinden Blvd., Garden City, Idaho. We really had some good beers and the food to accompany it was well matched.

I have also posted a general menu from Salt Tears here. They have specials several times a week and music. Left-Click these graphics to get a larger and printable view of these menus.

This is the weekend special menu. Live music every Thursday and and Saturday with Fridays being a different fish meal. Use the scan code to go to their site.

Jennifer and Danny, Manager of Salt Tears (Thanks Jan), are stocking the Finger Foods to go with the beer.

Andy Leathers of Crooked Fence Brewery. Story goes that the fences in the meadows of Sun Valley are “crooked” and that is where the name of this brewery came from. Andy  previously worked at Widmer Brewery in Seattle.

The three beers of Crooked Fence. (L-R)
Picket Porter
nice blend of chocolate and coffee. I also got some sesame off of it so it might go well with an Asian dish. 5.5% alc
Rusty Nail Pale Ale
my favorite for the night. an Idaho pale ale with cascade and galena hops. great with a summer BBQ.
5.5% alc

Hole Wheat
a very light beer that will work well as a thirst quencher. made with wheat, pilsner and 2-row hops. orange peel and grains of paradise

(L-R) Picket Porter, Rusty Nail Pale Ale and Hole Wheat

Finger Foods to go with the beers
Salt Tears Pickled Vegetables
Onion Sour Cream Dip
Cheese Fondue

Salt Tears
Cream of Broccoli Soup

10-Barrel Brewery Coming To Boise?

03 Saturday Sep 2011

Posted by Bob and Robin in 10 Barrel Brewing, Beer and Ale, Party Time, Special Events, Special Information

There is a story in the Idaho Statesman by Patrick Orr entitled Patrick Orr: 10 Barrel Brewing coming to Boise?. Follow the link to read the full story. But here is a teaser from the article.

“We are thinking about Boise, I can say that,” Wales said, confirming 10 Barrel is the business that has discussed the 9th and Bannock property with the Idaho Department of Lands. “We are looking at a few different cities. We just love the city (Boise). We like the vibe.
“We like the proximity to Bend. We like the size of (Boise). The site is Downtown, and it’s close to the North End. We think there could be a good lunch business. We just really like everything about it.”
Boise has two brew pubs (TableRock and The Ram) in the Downtown area already, but neither is in the core. I really like the idea of a new unique brew pub in the middle of Downtown, and how it would be close to 8th Street and Basque Block restaurant nexuses but expand that area to the west, where it would be across the street from Yen Ching.

Let’s cross our fingers that 10-Barrel Brewing comes to Boise. They offer some fantastic IPA’s. Be sure to follow the link above to read the full article. It is really informative. Cheers!

Bend, Oregon Brew Pubs

23 Monday May 2011

Posted by Bob and Robin in Beer and Ale, Brew Pubs, Party Time, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, What's For Dinner?

Only the photo from our motel room is bleak and dark. (Great effect using black and white on this photo.) The weekend, however, was a super weekend in Bend, Oregon. Along with some other tasks to complete – see the Retirement in Idaho blog – we also had a great time visiting some brew pubs in Bend. As it turns out, we had a comparison tasting of beer. Look at these photos and the story should become clear. Cheers!

Mount Hood from Brothers, Oregon. It’s a long way to the mountain from this vantage point.

Buddy wanted to go to bed after an eventful day. This is the first time we have taken him with us for any distance or period of time. He did very, very well!

Our first stop was at the Pine Tavern in Bend. They have a good Happy Hour. I asked the manager, Rob, what beer he suggested to have with our appetizers. He suggested a 10 Barrel Apocalypse IPA and the discussion of this beer is in the previous post. It was an awesome brew!!

Fried Green Beans
Onion Rings
These were both very good!

Crab Taco

Beef Bites

Trader Joe’s in Bend, Not Boise! Why not?

Robin trying to make up her mind in Trader Joe’s.

Deschutes Brewery and Pub

Inside the pub.

Here is the Special! Only problem is, they were all out of the house sausage. Too bad, they were probably good!

Here is the flight we had. Reading the top row, left to right:
Deschutes Brewery Hefeweizen (Good with oyster shooters), Trees From Doom Dunkel (Sweet) and Green Lakes Organic Ale (Best with brats)
Front Row, Left to right:
Welcome Back Wit (Rated this best), Hop Henge Experimental IPA (Rated second), Inversion IPA (Rated at the bottom. This was supposed to be better than the 10 Barrel Apocalypse IPA. It was not.)
The Inversion just did not meet up to the 10 Barrel Apocalypse IPA. See below.

10 Barrel Brewery and Pub

The building. Look close if you are driving … You can miss it.

The patio with the fire going – it was cool – is very inviting.

Their pizzas are good, but not as good as the Flying Pie Pizza here in Boise. (We didn’t throw any away, though.)

Colorful T-Shirt!

Apocalypse IPA, 22 ounce is all they sell. This is an awesome brew! It definitely is a benchmark for me. Slightly – very slightly – sweet and very, very smooth. Light with a long finish. It went very well with the Pepperoni Pizza we had. I did tell our Waiter that we were there at the suggestion of the Pine Tavern Manager, Rob, and that we had done a comparison tasting between their Apocalypse and Deschutes Inversion. 10 Barrel won … substantially. He was happy!

So there you have our brewery tour in Bend, Oregon. I guess we will have to go back and finish our tour. That sounds like fun!! And let’s see if we can get the 10 Barrel Brewery Apocalypse IPA here in Boise! Bet you won’t keep it on the shelf. It’s that good. If it were a wine, it would be a 98! Cheers!
