Shige

14 Saturday Aug 2010

Robin had to go back into St Luke’s Hospital today for an out patient procedure. (She is fine!) But she has been on a clear liquid diet since Wednesday. She is hungry! So, she said she wanted to go to Shige. And that we did! Such a treat! Out of 5-Stars, I think they well deserve 4-Stars and maybe 5-Stars. I will have to dwell on that one.

My one mistake tonight? I left my camera at home so I have no photographs of the presentation. And it was awesome! Guess I’ll just have to go back for the photos and while I’m there, probably eat something.

It can be pricy. Ranging from $10.00 to $51.00. You can choose from any of their 3 menus no matter which restaurant you are in – the Economy Room, the Sushi Bar or the Main Dining Room. We sat on the “veranda” on the second floor of the Eastman Building. Very open and cool tonight. (I saw one falcon at the box!) Actually, it can be breezy. But seating is also available inside. Here’s what we had:

Lobster Bisque ($8.00)

Miso Soup

Shige House Salad ($6.00)

Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass ($23.00)
with
Shitaki Mushroom Sauce

Tempora Sashimi ($18.95)
with
Carrot, Zuchinni, Brocolli, Cabbage Slaw, Diakon, Romaine Leaves, Scallops, Tuna, Jalapeno, Sweet Potato

Salad with Daikon

Green Tea Ice Cream

Grilled Carmelized Pineapple and Vanilla Ice Cream

All I can say is, if you are in Boise and you want some very top notch Japanese food, try Shige! It is well worth the trip. Service is superb and extremely friendly. Cheers.

Two Restaurants Reviewed

30 Sunday May 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Food, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants, Seafood

Back around the first of May, I received an email from Danielle Dussult, Account Associate at MS&L Worldwide for Bonefish Grill, a marketing firm, asking us to review the Bonefish Grill and another comparable restaurant. For doing this, she sent us two $25 gift certificates, one for the Bonefish Grill and the other for Red Lobster. She also sent a nice fish spatula. We thank her for these items. Look at the review for Bonefish Grill and Red Lobster that will correspond with these photos. I will start with the Bonefish Grill photos.

Here is the Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer. This is really a good appetizer.

I had the Diablo Shrimp Fettuccine. This was very good, but I think it had too much sauce on it and it was a little spicy. I think it would have been better with less sauce.

Robin had the Long Fin Tilapia. The tilapia tastes like a fresh water fish – Gout de Terrior. And the shrimp tasted like the Song of the Sea – Chansons del Mare. That is very difficult to do in Boise.

We took pour daughter and her friend with us. He had the Fish and Chips and he said they were very good. She had the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos and said they were spicy hot.

We shared a Key Lime Pie for dessert. I did not get the intense lime flavor, nor did Robin.

The Crème Brûlée was really very good. Smooth and creamy as it should be. The caramelized sugar was good.

——————————

Here are the photos from the Red Lobster.

For an appetizer, Robin and I had the Wood Grilled Shrimp on Brochette. A good appetizer.

I had a combination platter called Seaside Shrimp Trio. It had Walt’s Favorite Shrimp, which was a little too salty, Shrimp Scampi, good, and Shrimp Linguini Alfredo, very rich. Not as good as the Bonefish Grill, Diablo Shrimp Fetticine.

Robin had the Chef’s Grilled Tilapia. She said that the flavor of the tilapia was hidden by the soy sauce. It was not as good as the Bonefish Grill.

The Apple Crisp had very little apple in it and the cake base was overwhelming.

The Key Lime Pie was more like a NY Cheese cake. It was heavy and not light.

So there you have our opinion. The rankings?

Red Lobster – 2 1/2 Stars
Bonefish Grill – 3 1/2 Stars

Our reviews are based on the following statement and have been for many years now.

We will endeavor to critique these restaurants on (1) Ambiance, (2) Food Presentation, (3) Food Quality, (4) Service and (5) Cost. We will rate these places from one (1) to five (5) stars. A 1-Star restaurant deserves the comment, “That’s good enough for this year” and a 5-Star restaurant is superb and deserves a note home to Mom. There is nothing wrong with a 3-Star restaurant – We would take friends and relatives to a 3-Star restaurant and we will return to a 3-Star restaurant.

There was one other contributing factor to the Red Lobster loosing this contest: We had to ask for table settings and napkins. To me, this is a huge mistake and should never happen at any restaurant. But then too, the food was just OK. You can see all of Our Reviews by following the link.

Berryhill and Co, Boise

Berryhill and Co, one of Boise’s better restaurants. Here is their Chicken and Risoto Chicken with Fresh Vegetables. We wnt there for Sunday Brunch and we were extremely pleased. Please look at the link for our Restaurant Review. The next several photos are from their brunch. If going for brunch, you may want to call for reservations.

Soup, gravy and roast beef.

Fruit, wilted spinach, French toast, scrambled eggs, quiche, bacon, potatoes, bangers and pasta.

The Goodie table!

The end result of the tables of food! A good meal for $14.00 per person.

Sauerkraut, Part I

11 Sunday Apr 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Recipes, Restaurant Reviews, Sauerkraut

I made 2 pints – 4 half-pints – of kraut back around the first of the year and gave some to a few people to try. It was OK if they did not like it, but I had to know why. I now have 14 lbs in “getting happy” with some minor changes. (Robin gave me a great Kraut Crock for Christmas) Here is the first reply to the tasting so far. Two more to go.

Hi, You Two,

I have just eaten the best, most delicious sauerkraut I have ever tasted in my whole life—a mere 29 years—and I’m sure you can guess who made it. Wow! That is terrific; absolutely wonderful. I am running out of superlatives, but, no kidding, it was the best. Can I get on your Sauerkraut Donation list? Here is how I made it: boiled red potatoes until just barely tender, drained water, added hot Louisiana sausages, your sauerkraut, a bit of brown sugar and a sliced apple. To die for. Our stomachs are bulging, we can barely move, but Bob and I are happy campers—we ate the whole thing.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful sauerkraut with us—I need to return your jar. See you next Wednesday—I’m sure I will still be raving.

Hugs,
Gail

Once I get the recipe down and the technique corrected, I will post the results here. Until then, think Pork Mit Kraut! Cheers.

Ahi Sushi Bar, Eagle

20 Saturday Feb 2010

We were teaching in Eagle today and had some time off for lunch. We decided to change our lunch menu to something different – at least culturally! We went to the Ahi Sushi Bar, 1193 E. Winding Creek Drive #104, Eagle, Idaho 83616. (208) 938-FISH or E-Mail them. You can also find them on Facebook.

According to their website,

Ahi Sushi Bar offers a relaxed casual environment where you can dine with friends and family and enjoy the pleasures of fresh sushi.

Their California Roll (Crab, Avocado and Cucumber)was great. Robin had a Fresh Water Eel – Unagi which was also great. If you are in Eagle, be sure to stop in and have some wonderful sushi. Be sure to check their website for complete menu items! They do offer beer and wine, along with a variety of teas and soda pop. Let them know you saw them on this blog. Cheers!

"The Season’s" Greek Dinner

20 Sunday Dec 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants, Seasons Bistro

On Thursday, 17 Dec, we went to The Season’s in Eagle for their Greek Dinner. Sorry, but it did not meet expectations. I grew up with some very close Greek friends; participated in the Greek Neighborhood “Greek Days”; each summer attend the Boise “Greek Festival” and do like Greek food very much. This event at The Seasons fell short. I missed that “authentic” Greek flavor – the strong Greek oregano taste and other spices that are traditionally used in this style of cooking. But, I must say that their use of cucumber in the dishes was very good – as was the Corn Dip, which is not Greek (Thanks Rachel!!). The Lemon Rice Soup was awesome and could be used to help fight off any flu!

Spices from Greece like sesame; white sesame; Machlepi; and Cumin are also highly thought of by renowned international chefs and the most valuable and expensive spice, red saffron, is cultivated in Greece … Generations of Greek cooks have focused on many that have now become essentials of traditional Greek cooking.
Herbs: chamomile, marjoram, mint, oregano, sage, basil, thyme, rosemary, dill, fennel, celeriac, flat-leaved parsley, coriander, bay leaves.
Spices: Cinnamon, pepper (black and white), cloves, allspice, anise, cardamon, nutmeg, cumin, paprika, pink, saffron, sesame and white sesame.

However, this is not enough to keep us from returning to The Seasons. We know what they can do and we know how good the restaurant can really be. Maybe they were overwhelmed with the crowd that came in. Maybe something happened in the kitchen. I don’t know, but I know they can do better and I look forward to returning. Our original review of The Season’s can be found by Clicking Here. Cheers!

Idaho Statesman Restaurant Review

11 Friday Dec 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Food, Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants

I recently read Greg Hahn’s restaurant review, Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone eclipses tropical tiki fare in the Idaho Statesman, and like some other commentors, I really must take exception to the article. I totally agree with Michael Boss, Behind The Menu, where he states

I’ve been to Sweetwater’s a number of times now, and I do have to take exception with Greg’s observation that the menu prices are on the high side for lunch. Let’s be clear: this is not a local burger joint. Having done some interviews with Sue and Joe for Behind the Menu, I have to agree that they’re raising the bar on product sourcing…and let’s face it, you gets what you pays for.

Interesting. That’s the second time this week that I have heard people being told that if you want fast food, go to McDonalds or Burger King. (Don’t get me wrong, both of those establishments have their place.)

And from DDTDaughter, another commentor on the article:

Sweetwater’s quality, taste and portions more than make up for the comment “relatively expensive for Boise”. Plus the fact that they are using local, humanely grown and sustainable ingredients from meat to eggs and they have the freshest American caught seafood and offer exceptional vegetarian dishes on their menu, goes to show they care. Not a fast food chain, where you pay a lot more for unhealthy menu items.

I have a difficult time rationalizing why a reviewer would pan a restaurant for charging high prices when the critic, Greg Hahn this time, makes statements like,

The “tropical” restaurant – heavy on Caribbean with some south Asian flair and a few detours around the equator – replaced Milky Way Downtown and arrived with a pedigree: owners Sue and Joe Zimmerman ran the Sweetwater Jam House in Portland for almost nine years. And you can tell – the food and the feel of the place already is sophisticated and cohesive.

Sorry, but I just don’t agree with Mr Hahn on his criticism where he states, “… And as you maybe have figured out from the prices I’ve listed, Sweetwater’s is a relatively expensive restaurant for Boise, and that’s even more pronounced at lunch.” We have eaten at Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone three times now and we will return. The quality, style and flavors are what I go to a restaurant for and Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone definitely comes through and shines. I don’t mind paying a little more for quality and it’s the quality that counts. Did you ever eat at Andrae’s here in Boise before it left after many years and spend $500.00 for a dinner for 5? I think that Mr Hahn misleads the reader and the public in his article. Please do read it as linked above. That’s my “Two Cents”. Cheers!

Rachel K's Bistro

Here is one awesome pasta bistro right here in our “backyard”! While you are in Eagle, do try Rachel K’s Bistro on State Street.

Rachel K's Pasta Selection

Left Click on the image on the right to enlarge. (Print it out if you want) Make your own pasta dinner! Select one (1) type of pasta and then go wild!! Pick as many ingredients as you want. As you can tell from he pasta selection sheet, the combinations are incredible. For instance, I had Fettucine with Prima Vera, Mushroom, Broccoli, Roasted Red Peppers, Artichoke Hearts and Shrimp. Then Chicken and Shrimp with a Parmesan Cheese topping. It was awesome!!
Then Robin had Penne Pasta with Alfredo. Then she added Onion, Mushroom, Fresh Tomato, Black Olive, Artichoke Hearts, Fresh Spinach and Fresh Garlic. She then had it topped with Feta Cheese. Look at the slides. You will see. This is easily a 4-Star restaurant!

But here are the photos. Do enjoy!! We did!

The Seasons Visited and Reviewed

21 Saturday Nov 2009

Yes, in fact, we did take an impromptu visit to Seasons on Saturday 21 November. We were going to Caldwell, ID to join in on the Coyotes Group Grand Opening, and decided to stop in here. An awesome meal! Great food! Here is our Review We did rate the restaurant a 4-Star and it deserves every bit of that. The food is soooooo very good and it is a great place to take family and friends. They are even going to have some “special” nights where they feature specific cuisines. 17 December 2009 is a “Greek Dinner” and it will be awesome. Owner Rachel Hurn and Chef Eric Peterson do a fantastic job. I urge you to visit them. Be sure to check out our review as linked above. And they do use local products and they are expanding their wine selection to include most of the Idaho wines. And of course, here are some photos. Cheers!

What’s Behind the Menu?

07 Saturday Nov 2009

Posted by Bob and Robin in Restaurant Reviews, Restaurants, Thought For The Day

In the blog blip on 4 November 2009 titled, Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone, there was a comment left by Michael Boss of Behind The Menu. He stated that he has done an interview with Sue Zimmerman, Owner, along with her husband Joe and Exec Chef of Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone. According to the introduction on his web site, Mr Boss states that,

Pull up a chair, and let’s talk about food. More specifically, let’s talk about the culinary scene of the Treasure Valley. And while we’re at it, let’s hear from the people who create that scene. We believe that locally owned culinary businesses are an essential part of the soul of a place. They offer more than food — they serve up big heaping helpings of regional identity. This site is dedicated to telling their stories. Through blogs, podcasts and social media, you’ll learn about the folks “behind the menu”. We hope you’ll enjoy hearing these stories…and that you’ll become a part of the conversation about our local culinary scene as well.

The interview with Chef Zimmerman is an excellent example of getting the “behind the menu” perspective and you should really listen to the interview and then go to the restaurant. For example, Chef Zimmerman was asked that if someone arrives at Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone for dinner, what would be her suggestion for dinner. Here are her suggestions:

Appetizer
Conch Fritters
Conch Salad

Main Course
(One of 3)
Curry Goat
Grilled Jerk Chicken
Curry Avocado Salad

Dessert
(One of 3)
Key Lime Pie
Chocolate Torte (Flourless)
Flan

Really, there are two things you as a reader of this blog should do: (1) Go to the Behind The Menu web site and explore it, and (2) Visit Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone more than once! Now, we will have to start to pair some wines with these dishes. And by the way, I spent a year in India when I was a teen and we had goat probably 4 or 5 times a week. Then I lived in Giles County Tennessee in the 1960’s where goat was a staple in a little place called Aspen Hill. I was not impressed at either location with the goat. Point is, at Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone, the goat is Kid, not mutton. In India and Tennessee, the goat was not kid. It was mutton. Think of it as a matter of time. Young goat – kid – may be similar to young lamb – lamb – and not mutton!!! Here is my promise: I will try the Curry Goat and I will try to eliminate the epicurean baggage I carry about goat! I promise. And I will place my experience here on this blog. Cheers! That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!
