Happy Birthday To "the Buzz"!

Although the fog came in on cat feet and created an eerie glow and a mysterious feeling of quiet, it was great to celebrate the 3rd Birthday of the Buzz! Congratulations to Chisti and Tommy!

Oh yes. Something else. If you need to re-supply your pantry or cookie jar with those scrumptious Girl Scout cookies, and everyone absolutely does need to re-supply your Girl Scout cookie supply, make your way to the Buzz, have Tommy make you a great cup of coffee and a sandwich, ask him for a pen and fill in Bailey’s order form for at least 12 boxes of your favorite case of Girl Scout cookies. That would make Bailey very, very happy. And if Bailey is happy …………. But for now, here is the Birthday Dinner! Thanks Cristi and Tommy for three great years.

Go Broncos! Last Game Today.

So it is lightly snowing. 33 degrees F and essentially no wind. Supposed to maybe change to rain this afternoon. But close to 40 degrees. We’ll see. So I guess the Boise Sourdough Bread that I have made, might be good with beef stew. Might just be good to counter the cold weather! The Taste Test has been made – The bread Passed with flying colors! YUM-O.

But then, we must also eat healthy at a Tailgate Party. How about some mixed Blue and Orange Fruit? (Blue Berries and Mandarin Orange) Use your imagination, please. Gail says, “Sharon–I am Ccing Bob so we can brainstorm what might go with chicken wings, chocolate cake and beef stew…I am wearing lots of warm clothes–expect to look like Michelin Woman.” (Believe me, Gail never looked like the Michelin Woman!) I will have some photos later tonight. Cheers! and GO BRONCOS! BSU 42, Utah 14.

It was a great afternoon! Great to have everyone with us and some really great food. As a surprise, we gave Marnie a started for her wine cellar – 4 cases from our stash!!! And because she is making cakes now, we gave her these two books:

1).”Cake Bible”
By Rose Levy Beranbaum
William Morrow Publisher, 1988
ISBN 0-688-04402-6

and

2). “Booze Cakes – Confections Spiked with Spirits, Wine and Beer”
By Krystina Castella and Terry Lee Stone
2010
ISBN: 978-1-59474-423-5

Two really good books. And then there was the dinner. Here are some photographs. Here is the link for Part I of Marnie’s Birthday Dinner.

Jaialdi was first celebrated in 1987

30 Friday Jul 2010

Cristi and Tom from the Buzz always send some very interesting and timely information. I thank them for sending this information on Jaialdi celebrated by the Basque Community here in Boise. This is really interesting and you may get some insight that you did not have before. Cheers!

Jaialdi 2010

Jaialdi was first celebrated in 1987 as a one time celebration in which the old and new, local and international would celebrate in an educational, cultural, traditional, and entertaining fashion. It was held at the 100 plus year old ex-Idaho State Penitentiary, that is now a state park. Jaialdi ’87 attracted approximately 30,000 visitors who thoroughly enjoyed the location, enthusiasm and high quality entertainment. The festivities included a parade, symposium, mass, street dance, sports exhibitions, dance-song-musical exhibitions, souvenir booths, food, drink, and rekindling of old friendships.

During the Idaho Centennial, Boise requested that the Basque Community once again celebrate with Jaialdi. Therefore Jaialdi ’90 was celebrated. It was then decided that Boise should celebrate Jaialdi every five years. It is always the last weekend in July to coincide with the Boise Basque communities celebration of their patron saint, San Ignacia of Loyola.

The purpose of Jaialdi is to celebrate. Jaialdi describes a week of gathering and celebrating. At Buzz this weekend we will be celebrating by enjoying some good Spanish wines, some tapas, and the music of Mountain Fever. So if you are on your way to the Fairgrounds or back down to the Basque block downtown, stop by and enjoy a Calimoto or a glass of wine with us at the Buzz.

Sincerely,

Cristi and Tom Takeda

Malasian Curry Dinner

18 Sunday Jul 2010

Posted by Bob and Robin in Celebrations, Main Dish, Photos, Photos By: Bob Young, What's For Dinner?, Wine Dinners

The Malaysian Curry Dinner on 17 July presented by Chef Derek Selbo was a good event. This was our first time at one of his events and the crowd looked like a good one, about 65 people. My only comment is that this curry was a sweet curry and I did not expect this. Neither did one other individual at our table. It was good, nonetheless. What I was expecting was more along the lines of a Punjab or Bombay style curry, which has more cumin and turmeric in it than the Malaysian. On the other hand, the Malaysian is a lot more fruitier. I guess just personal preference and what you were first exposed to. (My first exposure to East Indian curry was in New Delhi in the mid 1950’s) One thing that really impressed me was the diversity of the crowd. See the photo of the folks at our table. The wines were varied as everyone who wanted to, brought a bottle. We took a bottle of 1998 Rose Creek Johannesburg Riesling and a 2007 Estencia Pinot Grigio. Enjoy the photos!

Some of the crowd.

Curried Hard Boiled Eggs and Nam.

Saltine with Cream Cheese and Pickle and Strawberry Jam, Stuffed Celery, Chutney and Nam

Chicken Curry, Coconut, Tomato Relish, Bananas and Rice

At our table: Robin, Frank, Suzy, Claire (England) and Marcia (Tobago).

The moon rises between the trees and the end of a good dinner and good company.
